Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

2008, bottle. Pours clear dark brown with an average, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), average hops (flowers, herbs, spruce), average yeast (dough, earth) with notes of plum, licorice, and nutmeg. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.

On tap at the White Horse, Parsons Green, London. Labled as Merry Xmas and 8% abv. By taste it was obviously nothing like that strength. I could find no record of sush a beer anywhere on the net so I am assuming this identity. Deep brown with an off white head. Toffee malts with a restrained hoppy finish and a vague spicy hint. Nothing special at £7 a pint!

Pours a very dark brown color, almost back, with a frothy beige head. Very sharp flavor of holiday spice with a pine-ish finish. Medium body. Not my favorite style.

Deep brown body with some clarity. Head barely hangs on. Deep in color and character. Wine-ish. Not a favorite. Finish improves it for me, but still less than what I expected from both the brewer and the style. originally posted at: <a href="http://beercritic.wordpress.com/2009/01

Bottle, 2008 (Sampled 01/24/09). Poured a deep dark red-brown. A medium frothy light tan head. Lots of cinnamon and clove on the nose. Definitely a Christmas smell. Light spruce and cinnamon flavors at first. A nice hidden chocolate flavor detected as well. Has almost a Coke flavor too it, yeah definitely. Mouth is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Have some more of these aging to compare.

2008 bottle...huge light tan foamy head with great lacing on this one. beer is the color of cola. very earthy hop aroma with a touch of roasted malt and spice...cinnamon and cloves? flavor is piney with a touch of cinnamon and malty sweetness. the finish lingers smoothly into a dry roasted piney aftertaste.

2008 - Magnum color is dark brown/cola with a reddish tint. head is tan and very creamy with plenty of lacing. aroma is loaded with raisins and prune. flavor has light chocolate notes, plenty of the dark fruits and a subdued hoppiness to boot. not bad.

Bottle from Trinity Liquors in Spring Hill, FL. Aroma of spices and cinnamon. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Flavor isnt as spicy as the aroma...more like a porter...some wood...some smoke...a little cinnamon, but nothing sticks out enough...Pretty nice on the palate. Overall...its alright...just nothing "special" by any means...I wouldnt by it again...but its not bad.
