Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Pours a dark reddish brown with a big tan head. The aroma is really cool... mint and light, bitter hops blended with spruce...! The flavor is great, with caramel and malt rounding it out nicely. Mouthfeel is light, but not too watery. A really nice, unique holiday beer.

I feel like I may have gotten a bum batch. Mouthfeel is very weak. Flavor is mostly spices - caramel, nutmeg - but come through most strongly in the nose, not much in the mouth. Mostly bitterness in the mouth. And a bit watery. Meh, hoping the rest are better.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown body with hints of ruby in the light. Small, light brown head that dissipates slowly and remains nicely laced. Aroma is sweet and spicy. Lots of caramel and molasses blended with a holiday spice nose of nutmeg, ginger, and cinamon.

2008 bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Dark brown pour with a creamy beige head. Smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, toffee, and ginger. Taste has notes of spruce, bubblegum, oranges, and coffee. Has some minty bitterness in the finish. Different and tasty, but one a year is probably enough.

Draft @ the J. Clyde. Pours brown with thin tan head. Aroma and taste of nutmeg, cinammon, and chocolate. Huge spices in the flavor. Like drinking a glass of Christmas tree needles. I used to like this beer but not anymore.

33 cl bottle. 2007 vintage. Here we go. Creamy nice head but mostly diminishing. Complex flavor sweet finish with light bitterness. Dark bread with hints of chocolate roasted coffee and a typical citrus tone. Spicy with echos of coriander and ginger. A bit watery finish and the spices end up a bit sharp but its good and one of anchors classics. Cheers

Deep, roasted malt backcone with lots of molasses and spice. Some light pine and ginger. Nice holiday drink - bring on the solstice.
