Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Poured an attractive dark brown with slightly off-white head that dissipated fairly quickly. Aroma is a bit spicy and also malty. Taste was okay, nothing really stood out to me, except there seems to be a mint flavored finish to it. Beer is very smooth and easy to drink, but the flavor is just not really my cup of tea. Not bad, but I have to say I’m a little disappointed.

2005 Vintage This beer pours a dark brown color with a bubbly tan head. Lacing stuck around for the entire glass. Aroma was nice with hints of all kinds of spices, nothing over the top. Has strong taste of ginger and spices, and tasted a bit like eggnog. I was hoping for a little more of a punch out of this to help warm up the night. Beer was fun to sip on during a cold night, but one was enough.

Bottle. Each time I drink this beer I like it even more. Pours dark brown with tan head that has pretty decent retention. Aroma is subtle and wonderful, of dry malts and holiday spices. Medium body, complex flavor, that somehow manages to be both warming and refreshing. Very interesting, yet still very drinkable. I’ll buy another six-pack the first chance I get. Absolutely delightful.

What a great holiday brew! Great pour with lasting head and lacing throughout. Medium bodied, full of spices like drinking gingerbread. Just the right amount of hops to balance and complete an excellent brew.

12oz, 2007 bottle, this one is interesting a good sipping brew, with tastes of Cinnamon Graham crackers is predominate in what im tasting, dry mouth feel and nice smooth finish... interesting. 12oz, 2008 bottle, Fresh. Again more of the same graham spices, perhaps cinnamon and im getting some vanilla in here, something sweet which is really good to me.

Always a pleasure to tuck into this one, particularly on draft. Bottle from 2007 here. I love how they change it up each year. This time around there’s less nutmeg and clove, more of an emphasis on dry, spruce leaves and a slightly acidic feel. Not quite as lush and warming as earlier vintages, but still a rockin’ good holiday brew.

2007--Beautiful dark brown ale with a creamy brown head and nice lacing. Aroma is spice and juniper. Spice and spruce with nice bitter note and a bit of warming. medium body, creamy, bitter finish moving to mild sweetness.

2007 bottle. Aroma of spices, malts, coffee, mint, and cinnamon (among other holiday spices). Pour is a deep dark brown color with a medium thick brown head. The flavor just wowed me. Complex, and enjoyable.
