This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Bottle at desk in work . From beer hawk. A dark black / caramel brown coloured pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is liquorice spiced spruce tips, woody nutmeg, brown sugars, christmas spice. as always wonderful cinnamon nutmeg and gingerbread aroma with a caramel note also..dark brown no light passes thru with tan filmy head and lacing..taste a little more hoppy(pine) than apparent in the nose with the abovementioned cinnamon ginger flavors as well burnt malts and smoke apparent as well surprisingly dry finish..light-medium bodied long dry finish with a coka cola like aftertaste this isn’t my favorite one could use more sweetness and is even slightly harsh, still unusual and tasty though, a hop fan may rate this higher (2015 batch)

Bottle from Cocktails, Littleborough. 2013 Christmas Ale version. Dark reddish-brown with a thick frothy head. Includes plenty of dark malt, which is lightly spiced, with hints of roasted malt, but mainly sweet.

355 mL bottle. Dark brown pour bordering on black. couple fingers of light tan head, large uniform bubbles, reduces to to a thin ring / cap.Interesting aroma, spice, licorice and blueberries. Taste is more caramel and spice with a fairly strong roast bitter finish. Medium to fine carbonation with a thin body. The strong roast finish says sip but palate says gulp, otherwise pretty darn good.

2015 The beer is dark even black when you pour it. The foam is beige with large bubbles. Smells against some little, and the taste is less than I expected. But the malt is there and some brödighet. The scents here are darker but still a bit tame. A little dark bread, raisins, dark syrup. Find some chocolate, vanilla, caramel, nuts and a little Christmas spices. A little malt and hops dull, maybe some coffee. At first sip, the whole beer a bit smaller than expected, a little more tasteless and dropped character. Is a roasted flavor, the bread will find fairly quickly, with hints of raisins. Are some sweetness by the vanilla, chocolate, caramel, malt. Are some Christmas spices, cardamom, nuts, slabbe coffee. A little more carbon dioxide than I thought with it disappears quickly, a little bitter at the end.

The aroma has both rich caramel malt and piney hops; taste is pleasantly sweet; palate is smooth. Great winter beer!
