This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

2011 - a little bit over herbed for me. Is it just me, or does the Anchor Christmas tend to be great on odd years and just good to very good in even years? I thought 2010 was the best ever and I’m looking forward to 2012.

I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Beer tasting @ Havregatan 151120. Bottle (355 ml) from Kihoskh, Copenhagen. [ Vintage 2006 ]. Malty and caramely with lots of dried fruits, woody with spicy and some light liquorice notes, medium sweet and a bit flat, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry and woody with dried fruits.

2015 edition bottle. Aroma of maple, toffee, capucino, vanilla and cinnamom and some malts. Nice dark brown colour, head vanishes fast. Flavours are a bit porterlike, but also a bit watery. Lots of cinnamom, maple and malts. Sweet, maple/toffee aftertaste. Ok for what it is.

2015 version out of bottle from brewers droop, Bristol. pours deep dark ruby with an orange brown thick persistent head. Aroma is warming with doughy spice like light cinnamon, there is an earthy character against the soft roast nature and possibly spruce notes. The flavour has a dry, nutty roast/char flavour which is balanced by a silky texture. There are subtle spice notes here. Toward the back of the tongue there is a liquorice flavour reminiscent of my early homebrew but much cleaner and later,, some doughyness is perceived in the flavour. Overall, some great flavours and certainly a multifaceted beer though i would say the dough character is somewhat overwhelming some other aspects of the beer. Very nice, though.

Pours a dark brown with ruby glints where light comes through. A large brown-khaki head forms and retains well. Prune, brown sugar, and a little coffee are noted in the nose. I like the way this drinks--a soft, moderately thick fashion. Muted sweet prune fruit, light sorghum, and some of that homebrew recipe in a box characteristic are all noted in the flavors. Reminds me of a British Porter.

Pours a dark brown almost black color. Aroma of roasted malt. Taste is slightly nutty with a good dark malt flavor. Easy drinking with a lightly dry finish.

Flaska. Dofter av kryddnejlika, malt, karamell och vörtbröd. Smakinslag av kryddnejlika, ingefära, karamell och apelsinskal. Något tunn i kroppen.

Over the years, people have put their brains and palates to work trying to figure out just what the hell Anchor’s Christmas Ale is flavored with. Enough secrets have been leaked over the years you could probably figure it out after enough time on the internet. However, it’s more fun not to know. Besides, the formula changes from year to year, anyway. The 2015 release is dark brown with shades of mahogany. It has candy notes redolent of dark fruit (especially plum), toffee, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, molasses, and spices (cinnamon & nutmeg). While this is a malty brew, I was happy to note some fresh and lightly citrusy hops. The comparison is probably cheesy, but trying to guess at Christmas Ale’s components is like shaking a holiday present and trying to figure out what’s inside the box. Shit, that was lame. I’m becoming a sentimental, foolish bastard.

Helt ok!

2015 bottle purchased in CO. I pick up pick up chocolate, raisin, herbal and licorice notes. I’ve been trying it since 2007 and feel this is one of my favorites. I liked the 2007 a lot and feel this is very comparable. Hard to be 100% sure without the ability to try them side by side. I’ll hunt down a case of it.
