COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

As always, you have to be ready for this. This years version is strong on anise to me, and the juniper is there too. Halfway through my second bottle i find it to be cloying.

Pours a dark deep brown with a brown-white 1 finger head that lingers. Aroma is a sweet dark fruit/cherry with notes of vanilla and spice. Taste is of spice and bread with a light bitterness that finishes smooth and doesn’t last long. Mouthfeel is slick and refreshing. This is definitely a great beer to relax to on a winter day and all the flavors and aromas combine to hit the mark

Een volle, zoetige en kruidige geur en dito smaak. Duidelijke aanwezigheid van hop. Ideaal om mee te stoven, maar vooral om te drinken. (2014-versie.)

2010 Version on tap at Roman's Pub. Foamy pour, but what was left didn't last long. Dark brown color, muted smells of dark fruit. Taste follows along, a lot of plum flavor. That original hop presence is gone, and the finish is dry. After 4 years, it mellowed significantly. Very enjoyable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Anchor Our Special Ale (2005 and later)) Bottle 355 ml at home, 2014 vintage, served into a snifter, ABV 5.5% Deep brown red colour on the body with a tall and thick tan head, with good retention, leaving medium lacing on the glass. Aroma of spices, sugar, light caramel. Sweet taste with caramel, spices on the finish, toffee and a long bitter aftertaste. Medium body with soft carbonation and a slightly sticky palate. Very good.

Tap at The Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Poured a reddish brown with a frothy white head and some broken lace. The aroma is rich spicy over ripe red berry fruit. The flavour is moderate bitter sweet with a light veggie mineral light fruit palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
