COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Aleís recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editorís Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Bottle. Dark almandine body with a thick foamy head. Nose-smells like a really malty saison-lavender, heather, chamomille. Taste-clove, char, licorice, very light smoke (more of a byproduct of the char flavor), and roasted marshmallows. A lttle too thin and watery, which allows the charred flavor to really come up and bite you. Not the best OSA I have had. I will need to try this one again after it has sat in the cellar for a little while. Palate loses points because it is both watery and acrid at the same time.

Deep mahagony pour, short lived almost non existant head. Very subtle aroma of x-mas spices and slight sweet maltiness. Spices are these but not in yer face, mild malt, good mouthfeel but still too subtlefor my taste. This beer is usually overrated and this year it is again.

i dont know what happened to my beer...i can say, it is lucky to get a 3.1 in my books...aroma AND flavor are quite indistinct due to a watered-down approach by anchor....spices, malts, caramels....nothing else....very bland and somewhat tasteless...maybe it was a disaster having this beer after my last five (fullers london porter, lion stout, thomas hardyís ale, de dolle stille nacht, and rogue hazelnut nectar)

Taste like soap and berries. Has an amazing mouthfeel and aroma, but I canít get past the taste. This is the worst anchor Iíve had.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2011 2005 version: Tap, ít Klooster Delft. Sold as "snow Anchor". Loads of clove both in aroma and flavor. Very spicy, with clove up front. Some malt and raisin. Lacks balance. 6 3 6 2 10 = 2.7 2007 version: bottle: Strong aroma of red berries, cardemom and ginger. Spicy, yet warm alcoholic flavor with red berries. Thin. Too spicy to be really enjoyable. 2010 version: bottle. Dark brown color. Anis, dried fruit, orange peel and cardemom in the aroma. Sweet, spicy flavor with lots of citrusfruit, cinnamon, anis and cardemom. Spicy, but still satisfyingly balanced. (7 4 7 2 13 = 3.1)

I liked the 03 so much I bought 6 dozen so when I found this at Johnís I had to bring 6 back. An appropriate selection for 1400. 40% foam, note to self be careful pouring the rest of the bottles. Aroma seems rather subdued, light licorice and molasses with a trace of spice. Relatively light flavour. I can taste the cherry but the malt and spruce have been reduced from 03. Nice but not stellar. A beer with revisiting but a little quieter than expected.

Hazy deep brown hue, with a small tan-colored head, with a spicy nose of licorice, anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, malty chocolate accent, pine niddles note, hint of brown sugar in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a winey chocolatey malt character, with some licorice, anise, nutmeg spiciness, dark chocolate note, with some dark dried fruit accents, leading towards a mild chocolatey roasted malt, faint bitterness finish.

Not a huge fan of this one. Pours a ruby-brown color with a very thin head. Cannot place aroma, almost like dried dates. Taste is slightly toffee-like with hints of spiciness that I cannot quite place. A fun beer to try once, but I probably wonít be picking it up again.

2006. This still has malt, fruit, and spices but is thinner and lighter than older aged vintages. Brown beer and no sediment; probably filtered. Malt and fruit aroma with medium sweetness. Flavor has more malt and spices, including cloves and pine.
