COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

i dont know what happened to my beer...i can say, it is lucky to get a 3.1 in my books...aroma AND flavor are quite indistinct due to a watered-down approach by anchor....spices, malts, caramels....nothing else....very bland and somewhat tasteless...maybe it was a disaster having this beer after my last five (fullers london porter, lion stout, thomas hardy’s ale, de dolle stille nacht, and rogue hazelnut nectar)

Taste like soap and berries. Has an amazing mouthfeel and aroma, but I can’t get past the taste. This is the worst anchor I’ve had.

I liked the 03 so much I bought 6 dozen so when I found this at John’s I had to bring 6 back. An appropriate selection for 1400. 40% foam, note to self be careful pouring the rest of the bottles. Aroma seems rather subdued, light licorice and molasses with a trace of spice. Relatively light flavour. I can taste the cherry but the malt and spruce have been reduced from 03. Nice but not stellar. A beer with revisiting but a little quieter than expected.

Hazy deep brown hue, with a small tan-colored head, with a spicy nose of licorice, anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, malty chocolate accent, pine niddles note, hint of brown sugar in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a winey chocolatey malt character, with some licorice, anise, nutmeg spiciness, dark chocolate note, with some dark dried fruit accents, leading towards a mild chocolatey roasted malt, faint bitterness finish.

Not a huge fan of this one. Pours a ruby-brown color with a very thin head. Cannot place aroma, almost like dried dates. Taste is slightly toffee-like with hints of spiciness that I cannot quite place. A fun beer to try once, but I probably won’t be picking it up again.

2006. This still has malt, fruit, and spices but is thinner and lighter than older aged vintages. Brown beer and no sediment; probably filtered. Malt and fruit aroma with medium sweetness. Flavor has more malt and spices, including cloves and pine.

12 oz bottle, 2006. Pours Bombay mahogany color with a healthy head. Very spicy aroma that is mostly allspice. Lightly malty with a big spicy punch to the chops. I noted pepper, nutmeg and licorice hints. Semi-dry body. This was just too much for me. I thought the spice level was over the top and created an overly bitter beer. Nor did I really care for the spice components. Oh well….

12 oz bottle - 2006. Burgundy brown with a short, smooth tan head. Grape, orange, cloves. I think sangria or mulled wine. Rather sharp and fizzy. Toffee is overwhelmed by wood alcohol and bitter spices. Sour apple with a chalky finish.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is lightly malty (cookie, dark chocolate), lightly yeasty (dough), with notes of allspice, nutmeg, scorched pine needles. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.

Bottle. Dark pour with thick white head. Slightly bitter with a sweet undertone. Very light tasting but not as smooth as I expected.
