This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2006 Pours black with red highlights, small tan head. Aroma is loaded with spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, some citrus and toffee. Flavor is a nice balance of sweet and spice, similar to the nose. Texture is smooth and creamy. Nice holiday brew, very well made.

Bottle. Dark almandine body with a thick foamy head. Nose-smells like a really malty saison-lavender, heather, chamomille. Taste-clove, char, licorice, very light smoke (more of a byproduct of the char flavor), and roasted marshmallows. A lttle too thin and watery, which allows the charred flavor to really come up and bite you. Not the best OSA I have had. I will need to try this one again after it has sat in the cellar for a little while. Palate loses points because it is both watery and acrid at the same time.

For what this is, it is a solid winter beer that has become a tradition, .....but this just came off to spiced and having a odd metalic twang throughout. I love Anchor, remember this in the day in college when you’d be all like, winter beers rock, then pound one and puke, good times.

Pours a very dark red-black with a minimal brown head. Aroma of cloves and some cinnamon. Flavor is spices including cloves and roasted malts with a bitter finish. Goes down quite smooth. Overall this is a decent beer, doesn’t particuarly remind me of xmas, but is definately a winter beer.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2011 6/12/2011 Dark clear ruby colour. Big dirty head. Aroma is full of ginger and malt. So much ginger I can hardly pick out something else. Taste is dark fruit, plum, spice, not too sweet though, some coffee or bitter chocolate comes in the quite dry bitter end. Myself I am not too fond of this typical kind of dark fruit presence, that just reminds me of watery grapes. It all ends up pretty thin. 7/4/6/2/10

Ganska trevlig och kryddig doft, otroligt mycket lakrits och turkisk peppar i smaken. Eftersmaken kunde varit lite längre.

Fresh 2010 bottle. A pine / cleaning product smell sits in the aroma and is kinda weird. The taste is very much of herbs and spices, although to name one or two is impossible for me. Pretty sure there is some pine and some wood...but not overpowering or like an x-mas tree in a bottle. a decent malt, very distinctive of Anchor. A decent festive ale.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2014 2010: Great beer! excellent spices and delicious hops. Anchor does not fail. 2011 lots of christmasy spices. Leaves a dry mouth but at the same time buttery. Excellent. 2012 I have to lower the grade a bit as this time it didnt impress me much

Small bottle (with 2010 on it), shared with Drebus. Great color, dark with a deep-red glow. Makes you feel warm in cold days just by looking at it. Smelling it is completely different though. I smelled pepper! On first notive the taste is good, light bitter, but the aftertaste is pepper again, and that is somethibng I do not want to taste in my beer.
