This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

I picked this bottle up in San Francisco, and with the hope that I can hasten Spring’s arrival by getting rid of all my winter seasonals, I popped the cap. I can tell you right now that a luscious fruitcake aroma hit me as I poured this into a chalice. A very dark rusty blood body (ugh...I have to work on these descriptions) gives birth to a medium sized well-browned meringue head. The aroma of the aforementioned fruitcake is the big hit in this. It smells smooth and rich, full of spices that are not overplayed, but well-meshed instead. The flavour is impressive and soothing. There is quite a lot of caramel malt forming a backdrop against nicely balance cinnamon and nutmeg flavours, along with the hint of pine, before leading through to a slightly dry finish. The body is medium, and matches the flavours and feel of this beer very well. In fact, overall I’d say this is an excellently crafted seasonal brew, that left me wanting more.

On tap at Hawidere. black color, good, compact long lasting head. smells like vegetables and spices, cloves and pumpkin. medium body, aromatic spicy, tastes of pumpkin, light sweetness / light to medium bitterness, which seems to come both from hops and malts. the combination of sweet and bitterness with the spices doesnt work for me at all. too weird for me.

Bottle. Dark cola with a thick off white head. Aroma is mostly ginger. Taste adds some weird earthiness. Thin and strong carb. Not good.

Pint pour of fairly deep brown, with a thin tan head. Nose is Christmas, Some spices of nutmeg, brown sugar, molasses. Flavor is molasses, some Christmas spices, nutmeg and ginger, like a gingerbread man, but not a gingerbread house.... A sassy gingerbread man. She’s a sassy one... A sassy gingerbread man-woman. It’s a transvestite. A delicious transvestite gingerbread individual. Anyway, it’s a solid beer.

355 ml bottle from Ammersin 5 Vienna, 2014 version.
Dark copper body, with a medium, creamy, beige head.
Aroma of yeast, christmas spices, dried fruits, some chocolate.
Taste follows this pretty much, with some more subtle bitter hops.
Quite full, creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes very spicy, quite dry, a bit bitter hoppy and slightly sweet malty.

Nice! Not my favourite Anchor beer, but a nice christmas beer, quite unique, with lots of spices. Lacks the last bit of character though in my opinion.

Bottle. Surprised I havent rated this one yet! Pours clear hazel, medium tan head, dissipates quickly, good lacing. Aroma is heavily spiced (out the wazoo, it says in my notes), Belgian yeast, dark fruits, figs and raisins. Flavor is medium sweet and very light bitter, less spiced than aroma suggests, but still pretty overt. Medium body, high carbonation.

2014 version. Lots of chocolate and spice. Tastes like a gingerbread cookie or really spicy kruidnoten. Dark. This could be a really good dubbel if there was more alcohol and carbonation.
