COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

an all time favorite. This rating applies to the 2011 edition which has aged one year. Very spicy clovy nose, loads of clove, cinnamon, orange, port. Thick brown head. Long finish, medium bitterness.

Drank 27-1 in Malden with Marieke (working on my new year’s resolutions ;)). Taste is fine, pretty complex. Has a nice finish, winterbeer like. Bit thin though.

Si presenta ambra molto scuro con riflessi rossi. Schiuma beige compatta non molto persistente. Al naso caramello, spezie, dark fruits. Gusto speziato, tostato e ingresso secco. Corpo e carbonazione medi. Interessante.

12 oz. 2011 bottle tasted on 2016-01-22. Pours a deep ruby red color with a finger thick tan head. Aroma is heavy of spices, wood and a little bit of alcohol. Medium body, taste is interesting. A combination of malt and spice but I can’t put my finger on just one thing. Finish is more of the same. A complex beer.

Bottle shared. Just odd in every way. Some debate as to whether bottle is infected and it’s a drain pour. Spice and fake wood notes dominate. Malt profile is somewhat sweet but oddly bitter finish. Did not drink.

Don’t know how to rate this since it changes every year and I know it’s been different in the past (and thought I rated it). This is the 2015 version. Very dark brown with malty, woody aromas and an extremely tenacious foamy tan head. A bit of charred malt and light dark and semi-sweet chocolate in the flavor. Medium bodied and a bit watery. Nice roasty finish. Not the best version, but still a tasty winter brew.

Refrigerated 12 oz. 2015 brown bottle poured into a glass. Opaque dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is nice spice, medium body, low carbonation, and some small-bubble lacing. Taste is caramel malt, spice, some and herbal hops. Classic rich tasting brew.

Dark pour with a thin head. Aroma is light with a little spice and grain. Medium bodied. Taste has some spice to it. Yeasty finish. A little chocolate as well.

Version 2015. Un liquide brune foncée avec une superbe mousse. Un nez et une bouche qui goute et sent le chocolat épicé. C’est très épicé mais fort agréable. Peut faire penser à la Résolution avec plus de corps. Très bonne.

Dark brown color with ruby hints, frothy brown head. Aroma has fermented fruits, dark sugar and molasses. Taste is also fruity but without the fermented part. Really balanced, just the finish is slightly bitter and roasty. Body and carbonation are medium. Overall it’s an easy drinking, tasty winter ale.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass. Aroma is sweet dark fruits, cherry, brown bread, with some chocolate. Appearance is very dark reddish brown--virtually opaque--with finger-width light brown head that dissipates fairly quickly to ring with fair lacing. Taste is sweet dark fruits and molasses with a bit of roasted bitterness and hint of chocolate at the finish. Palate is light-bodied with thin, somewhat slippery texture, average to lively carbonation and light, dry, bitter finish. Overall, the secretiveness of the ingredients only adds to the allure of figuring out what it tastes like. This is quite good, for any season, but does evoke the holidays well. Get it while the gettin’s good!
