This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

d that mostly settles off. Aroma is like a spiced roasted lager. Tastes the same way with some vegetable and rd apple notes. Not my favorite.

Let’s split this between the 2014 and 2006 batches...cheers Craig.

Dark Chestnut brown, wee bit of cloudiness and a decent light tan ringed head. Nose is very pungent cinnamon, warming spice and soft nuttiness. Initial taste is lean sweetness, soft warming choc and builds to a light herby ess. Dense enough carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. Finishes clean spicy roast and lingers spicy good times.

Bottle 2014 - Light brown colour, nice creamy tan head with lacing. Aroma of raisins, gingerbread, cloves, honey and some resinous hops. Taste is dried fruits, ginger, cinnamon, honey with citrussy hop finish. Medium to full body, average carbonation. Not my favourite style, but i appreciate the balance, roundness and complexity. Nice christmas beer.

2014. Aroma is ginger, figs or some other dark fruit, nutmeg, malt. Appearance is a foggy reddish brown with a light tan head. Taste is figs, ginger, nutmeg, disappears very quickly. Mouthfeel is a decent carbonation but the flavor is very light and leaves immediately, which I suppose isn’t horrible. Overall, this beer is well past its prime yet somehow I doubt I would enjoy it more fresh.

12oz bottle shared with mr_h. Almost black, big foamy head. Leafy treacle aroma. Flavour of cinnamon and other spices. Sour aftertaste. Not my sort of beer.

2013 Version- Pours a very dark brown mahogany color with a thick tan head on top. Smells of mellow spiced fruit, toffee, molasses, pine resin, and gingerbread. Dry, spiced, somewhat gingerbread-y flavor. A little tart fruit, spruce, bitter chocolate, orange peel, and faint maple. Medium body, creamy texture, with a slickness that sticks to the tongue. Definitely better as it warms up.
