COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

This beer didn’t stand out in my opinion. Standard black porter color, not much smell, average taste and decent mouthfeel.

A black beer with a thick brown head. The aroma is of alcohol, sweet roasted malt, and raisins. It tastes like overripe bananas, raisins, alcohol, and a strong smokiness. The combination is not really to my liking, but interesting nonetheless.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a big and creamy, but diminishing beige-brown head. Good lacing. Quite sweet aroma, with notes of bread, toffee, fruits, sweet liquorice and remote barbecue notes. A bit cloying. Flavour is sweet and roasted with notes of sweet liquorice, fruits, faint smoked notes and a hint of vanilla. Feels a bit watery. Dry and a bit tart, roasted finish. Too much carbonation. Overall okay, but a bit too cloying for my liking. 15.07.11.

Draught @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam on 18 March 2011. Clear red-black, with pale brown foam head and part lacing. Deep earthy pungency and sweetness in aroma. Roast malts with some sour lactic flavours in-mouth; finish is sour with some citric notes. Zingy mouthfeel,

Very dark, but not coal black. Light barely comes through. Head disappeared quick and was not large. There seems to be some bubbles coming up constantly so there’s bohemian silk which lasts probably long. Smell is malty. Taste is dry and first aroma brings licorice in mind. Malts and hops are well balanced, while texture is a bit too fizzy to my taste. Finish is long and interesting.

Very dark Brown. Like black, at the glass. Ok head, holds pretty good, sticks nice. Coffee, chocolate, dark fruits. Good spiced, decent Porter for sure. But like most I miss a small boost. Moderated dry bitter roastiness gets trough mostly at the end.

Pours dark brown/black with thick, brown-stained head. Strong roasted barley aroma: I smelled it before I even poured the beer! Notes of coffee and mild chocolate on the nose. Complex flavor with mild chocolate, coffee, roasted grains and caramel blending to form a smooth, creamy texture. Slightly bitter finish with mild earth. Make no mistake: this is a fantastic beer.

A rich and sweet porter with noticable alcohol. More of a strong mild with toffee malt characteristics with none of the earthy characteristics I enjoy in porters.
