COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with some reddish tints, a thick, large latte head. Roasted malts and chocolate in the aroma, some coffee and liquorice. Much of the same in the taste. Very smooth and balanced. Excellent.

355ml bottle. Pours lovely opaque chestnut colour with excellent head. The nose is a little lighter than expected, with gentle milk chocolate. More milk chocolate then burnt malt on the end, The palate shows reasonable structure, there is a creamy texture, but not as creamy as I’d hoped. The finish is a bit cloying unfortunately. Overall, after the initial promising appearance, this did not deliver on nose, taste and palate.

pours a deep brown/black with subtle ruby hues...huge lt. mocha head...great retention and lacing. aroma is roasty with caramel notes, subtle dark fruit and coffee...faint piney hops. flavor has dark fruit, chocolate, and tobacco notes...hint of burnt toffee...rounded out by earthy hops. mouthfeel is slightly lively but a bit thin for my taste...roasty and slightly burnt finish.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2011 Pours dark, dark brown, almost black, with a creamy, fluffy, pillowy tan head. Smells strongly of malted barley with hints of coffee. Tastes like coffee and bitterness with hints of chocolate; definitely has a full roasty flavor. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture and more than expected mouth-carbonation, Anchor Porter finishes smooth with a light, lasting bitterness.

12 ounce bottle, code of 0N3, bottled on November 30th, 2010, bought as a single at World Market. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half frothy tan head. The head stays around for a long time, and there’s a lot of lacing left behind on the glass. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and some dark fruit. The taste is similar to the aroma, but the dark fruit flavors (plum, raisins) and bittersweet chocolate flavors are the strongest, and some burnt/charred malt flavors are noticable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s smooth, slick and a bit creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall, I think it’s a good brew. I’d definitely buy this again.

Very dark, nearly opaque, with a foamy tan head. 22 oz bottle. A flavor of roasty malt and nut along with woodiness. A crisp finish. Not as watery in the body as most porters can be.
