COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

12oz bottled August 7, 2010. Pours dark brown with a large foamy light brown head that leaves some really clumpy rings of lacing on the glass and holds a small cap. Aroma is dark fruits such as prunes, figs, and raisins, roasted malt, some chocolate, a bit of coffee, caramel and toffee round things out. Very good strength. Flavor mostly follows suit with a good dark fruit presence up front then some chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel and toast. Moderately sweet, low bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, somewhat creamy, medium carbonation. An excellent Porter I’ve enjoyed many times in the past but never got around to reviewing. Good stuff!

Fantastic beer. Had on tap at the San Francisco International Airport Anchor Brewing company location. The pour is pure opaque black with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is roasty, chocolately, coffee, nutty and roasty. The taste is full bodied, thick roasty malts, chocolate abundant. A beautiful beer overall.

bottle at home 10Feb11 pours opaque black with a medium brown head. Aroma is full on roast and bitter cocoa, smells very rich and robust. Flavor is rich and coats my mouth with loads of burnt sugar, caramel, tootsie rolls and a nutty character that reminds me of hazelnuts. Nice porter with lots of flavor.

Draft on tap at Sheffields (Chicago, IL). Pours a very dark blackish hue, near opaque with brownish edges that show some light brownish head. Dies to a thicker film, laces well, a bit cakey and frothy. Aromas are light cocoa and bakers chocolate, light roast and toast, toffee, creamy malts with some touches of dry soda bread. Initial is medium bodied, perhaps a touch lighter. Blends of cocoa, sweet and bitter cocoa, touches of roast, toast, creamy body with a silky smooth finish. Light roast. Toast, lingering toasty bread. Roast and touches of coffee, light roastiness. Simple, roasty and smooth with touches of light hops, cocoa and roast. A solid quaffable Porter. Mellow and decent roast. Balanced.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle at Fireworks.
Aroma: The nose is lightly roasted malt with a touch of caramel.
Appearance: It pours a very dark brown with ruby highlights and a foamy tan head. Great head retention.
Taste: The flavor is mostly caramel with a little roasted malt and raisin. A good bit of fruit moves forward as the brew warms. Fruitier than I expect in a porter but well balanced and good.
Palate: Medium bodied with average carbonation leading to a slightly dried fruit finish.
Overall: A bit more body and raisin than I generally like in my porter, but this brew is well done and very sessionable.

12 oz flaske matsort hælde med et forholdsvis lille lyse brunt hoved. Aroma af let brændt malt, noter af kaffe. Smagen bære præg af brænd malt og noget tørret frugt. Cremet mundfornemmelse med let restbitterhed.

Rather subdued in malty aroma, taste and decent palate. It gets a high score because it adds up to good porter that isn’t watery, although it could be more malty.

Bottle. Pours nice and dark. A white head, moderate lacing. Aromas of chocolate milk, dark chocolate and roasted notes. A bit of underlying licorice as well. Taste is lots of roasted notes at first, followed by a soft chocolate and some coffee. Body was a bit too carbonated, and the flavors were a bit weak, but still a very good porter.
