COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

A: snifter. deep rich brown, almost black color. light tan head with a medium retention level. fair lacing. S: roasted malts. some caramel and chocolate aromas, with a light sour note as well. T: a little sour, could be an old beer. some sweet roasted malts, mostly a chocolate flavor. I am also picking up some tobacco flavors. M: smooth and creamy. mild carbonation. not heavy at all for a porter. D: very drinkable. A good representation of style, but I think I need a fresher bottle next time.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2010 12 oz. bottle. Aroma - fruity, dark malt, with a wee bit of hops in the background. Smells British. Appearance - Black with a tiny bit of blood red in the center. Bubbly white foam head than retreats to the sides of the glass. Taste - A lot of the fruitiness found in a British porter up front. The middle is where the dark malt sweetness comes in. Bittersweet chocolate flavors for sure. Finishes roasty with a slight sour tartness. Palate - medium bodied with a very appropriate light carbonation. Overall - one of my favorite porters. Definitely more a nod to the British side of the style, but with a definite American slant. Amazing porter!

Pours black with thick creamy head and foamy lacing. Notes of coffee and chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Sour off-taste that clings to the back of the throat spoils the experience.

355 mL bottle from Beers of Europe. Bit of a gusher. Smells like a proper porter. Bit of an uneven head, but thats probably due to the way I poured it. Has character, and is readily drinkable. However its not anything special, just does the simple porter thing well. Its very smooth, and well worth a taste.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Aroma hints of roasted coffee and caramel. Appearance is black with a thick creamy foam that settles slowly. Taste is a little bit sour on the onset, then a little sweet followed by some bitterness at the end. There are notes of coffee and caramel in the taste as well. Very good beer overall, one of the best porters I have tried.

An enjoyable, if somewhat unspectacular, easy drinking porter, that went down well on its own on a winters night.
