Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

A dark brown coloured beer. A tanned head. Some chocolate in the nose. Better colder than warm. Some honey in the aftertaste.

One of my very favorite porters. Pours deep black with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is of coffee, deep roasted malt and a very little bit of floral hops. Flavor is similar to the scent, this porter has a very strong coffee flavor, along with cocoa, and a good bitterness that plays well with the roasted malt flavors. The palate is a little thick and grainy, however with a creamyness in the back of the mouth.

Bottled 355ml. It pours a very dark beer with a beautiful reflect of ruby. Strongly tanned mocha head. The aroma is mainly of dark chocolate, licorice and raisins. Full bodied and extremely rich. Nicely malty. Dry. Low bitterness. Beautiful lace, excellent appearance. Sweet. Licorice in the finish. Very pleasant, nothing more. Remarkably low carbonation.

12 oz bottle into a mug. Thin pour: black body with a dirty tan head, which provides descent lacing. Aromas of dark fruit, small hints of coffee; simple delicious aroma, though not very complex. Flavor is very unique for a porter. It is less smoky and earthy and more light and fruity, but not overly sweet like a fruit beer. Its flavor is dominated by grapes, which my friend pointed out and I ultimately agreed with. Medium bodied to light bodied on the palate; a bit watery and should be thicker in my opinion. Little to no carbonation. Overall: Nice to have an original beer in a certain style every now and then, and this does it for porters.

Dark black with a fairly substantial tan head. Carbonation is apperent in the mouthfeel, its nice but perhaps a touch to aggresive. Finish is fairly smooth with a touch of coffee/chocolate bitterness. Not my favorite style but overall a good beer

2/10/08 notes: bottle. Pours jet black with a small tan head. Nose is coffee, malts, maybe some bread. Palate features fair degree of carbonation. Body is very smooth, and has great semi-bitter finish. Flavors of coffee, roasts, and dark chocolate. Just really solid, without any gimmicks.

12 oz bottle into imp pint. Nice tan, tight head poured onto dark brown with ruby highlights. Smells of coffee and chocolate- and malt. Tastes of bitter/ smoothe chocolate. Can taste the roasted malt. Great feel in the mouth and very easy to drink. I haven’t had too many American porters, but I think of it as the American Fullers- different but very good and very consistent.
