COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Poured opaque black, with a thin, tan head. Aroma is faint chocolate. Taste is very straightforward: chocolate and roasted malt. An excellent representation of the style.

Best porter I’ve had in awhile. Dark chocolate flavor, not too sweet, good carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle pours very dark brown with a big, doughy light brown head and great retention. Aroma is signature anchor oxidative butterscotchiness, raisins, some chocolate, molasses, and coffee. Taste is coffee, raisin, caramel, butterscotch, some mint. Body is full, chewy, low carbonation, long bittersweet finish. Overall, this must be what beer was like 100-200 years ago; reminds me of Samuel Smith’s with the fruity butterscotchy fermentation profile. Pretty good if it were brewed in someone’s kitchen, but lackluster for a commercial example. Why is this so highly rated?

355ml bottle. Dark brown with a creamy head. Initially I get a sort of musty, aniseed-like aroma rising up. Dark fruits and chocolate swimming in the taste; different to the English porters I’ve had but everything seems so well balanced. Little bit of alcohol heat in the finish. Superb.

Bottle: I do vaguely remember that I tasted this beer in the past, though not making any notes, all I remember was that is was a delicious and well balanced brew. So I guess until next time, when I drink this beer again and feel the need of making a review for this brew, I might change this rating... Though now it is here in the database, why bother... It’s a good beer.

slight citrus note in the aroma, along with syrupy chocolate notes. quite sweet for me, but the body helps absorb that to an extent. medium body with medium carbing, makes it stay on the tongue long enough to bring you back to the glass.

Date: December 19, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Ale Jail Description: Opaque dark brown pour with nice amount of head. Aroma was chocolate and nutty. Taste was similar to aroma with some coffee. Was a tad too thin for me, otherwise very tasty brew!
