San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

BOTTLE 355ML Look: almost black with red highlights, beige creamy head. Aroma: intense dried fruit (prunes, raisins), some chocolate, toasty, not much roast. Taste: mostly dried fruit, some chocolate, a hint of acid astringency, dry moderate bitterness, some ashes in the finish.

An excellent fruity porter.

Excellent beer, great flavor and smell. One of my favorite porters. Sweeter taste and not too heavy.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter. "4JX" stamped on back label. Pours very dark brown with a tan head that quickly reduces; fairly good lacing nonetheless. Aroma: mild with more dark fruit than expected. Flavor: richer and less sweet than the aroma suggests. Hints of dark bread, raisins, and light spices, with some bittersweet chocolate and a touch of coffee in the finish. O: excellent porter, if not a great as the best (e.g., Fullers).

On tap at BrewDog Dundee. Pours black with a fairly thick head. Smells malty and sweet. Tastes of malts and honey. Medium viscosity.

"...is virtually handmade..." What the fuck does that mean?

Good appearance: strong head retention, handsome lace. Aroma and taste are fruity & sweet, exactly what a porter shouldn't be. Wtf Anchor?

Opaque dark purple with excellent caramel-coloured head. Nose milk chocolate and burnt malt, Taste medium bitter, light sweet. Creamy texture. The finish is quite short and the sweetness makes it too cloying.

Based on the raving reviews I expected more. That said, it is a good porter. Love the texture and the fact it is not sweet. Flavor is subtle but a bit weak. Mostly coffee with some interesting elements coming through: a faint smokyness, bitter hops, caramel and licorice. There is some nice sourness and a long dry bitter finish.

Insane! Never tasted a porter like it although always stuck to British ones so far. Appearance: endless black abyss topped with a delightful copper foam. Smells like heaven. Cola, spices, chocolate, caramel and a really dark top quality single estate espresso brewed to perfection. Taste is first sweet then sour with a roasted malt flavour that lingers deliciously at the back of the nose. Must try more American porters.
