COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle (355ml) from Vinmonopolet, Oslo. BB Aug 2011. Two-inch beige head, leaving some lacing. Very dark brown colour with a faint red hue. Meaty licorice/chocolate roasted malt aroma with some smoke, tar and coffee. Also a bit fruity. Medium-bodied, average carbonation. The sweetness is excellently balanced by a dry hop bitterness which lingers.

Bottle, home. Excellent porter, one of my favorite hometown beers. Anchor Porter pours a very dark shade of brownish ruby, nice highlights in the light, transparent but for the color. The head is big and creamy. The aroma is a mix of chocolate, coffee, roast, plums, molasses, mild booze, some porter ashiness, dates, blackberries, toasted granola. The flavor is smooth and rich. It’s intense for the abv with a lot of roast, dark fruits and brown sugar/molasses/caramel. The hops give just enough bite to reign things in. It’s one of the best porters around, in my opinion, and it’s relatively cheap and well-distributed - a testament to Anchor’s success.

Pours a nice tar black body with a thin off-white top. Smell is cough syrup, mild licorice notes and an unidentified species of American hops I don’t really like at all. Well, here goes the sip. As I imagined. Anchor uses this same kind of hop for their Christmas Ale, and for that very reason I detest this seasonal from Anchor. In this porter, it is more hidden and blended into the usual coffee and licorice, but nevertheless present enough for me to repel. Only to a certain extent, though; Anchor Porter has a decent mouthfeel and is fairly drinkable. I guess I just can’t handle that particular kind of hop. Gotta find out what it is.

A: dark with chocolate-colored edges. Pour created a large creamy, coffee-colored head which settled quickly, leaving a lasting lace. S: sweet molasses/caramel and fruit with faint alcohol tinge. T: Starts smooth and sweet with flavors of toffee, caramel and molasses. Malts and fruit predominate until the hops and carbonation take over. D: I have had this a LOT and it’s priced reasonably for a left coast offering,
