COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle. Smoky cocoa malt and hops aroma. Dark black-brown color with moderate tan head. Initially a slight burnt coffee that quickly fades to creamy chocolate with a mild hops finish. Long lasting flavor. A bit on the heavy side for a porter but other than that, very good.

Deep black color, large thick creamy head. Roasted malt aroma. Deep rich roasted malts and flavor. Coffee and chocolate flavor. Slightly sweet. Good hop to malt balance. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth and slightly hoppy. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, with a very slight metallic tinge. Nice tasting porter, smooth and very drinkable.

Bottle (650ml). Pours almost black, incredibly lively with a big light brown foamy-creamy head. Does the "guiness pour" settle-out thing wonderfully - head lasts forever, rocks out and leaves a half-decent lacing - top marks. Aroma is roast malt, somewhat vinous, stewed prunes and apple cores, slight hops, and tasty coffee and bittersweet chocolate notes as well - quite darkly fruit sweet on the nose. Flavour is like heaven’s own semisweet belgian chocolate with nuts and raisins bar - with dark roast malt, sourish wine overtones, other steeped fruits, coffee and cream. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, only lightly carbonated. This is one of the nicest porters I’ve ever had. Terrific blend of bitterness (coffee, chocolate, touch of hops), sweetness (fruit, malt and chocolate) with enough tartness to keep it all together.

Surprised I haven’t rated this. 12 ounce bottle from Total Wine West Richmond, rated 3/21/11. Pours a dark brown color with a large brown creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of bitter metallic hops, chocolate and roasted malts. The taste is roasted malts, caramel, bitter hops, some fruity notes. Medium bodied.

More like some of the roastier Belgian heavyweights than a porter, but who gives? This is a great beer. Oily pitch pour with a creamy beige head. Sticky, malty snout with sniffs of vanilla, molasses (probably), walnuts, raisins and espresso roastiness. Fudgy malt, xmas pudding, charred cocoa bitterness. A teaspoon of Marmite. Afternotes of licorice...and more charred malt roastiness. Really sticks around. As creamily bittersweet as I knew it would be. Worthy of the gold-rimmed Rochefort snifter.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2005 Re-rate. Has a nice roasted aroma wih a medium yellow and tan head. Smells of maple and caramel. Tastes a little dry with a hint of sherry and brown sugar. Finishes like day old coffee that is very pleasant. This is an excellent full tasting porter.

Picked up a single bottle from Cellars Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours an opaque dark brown, nearly black, brew with a thick large bubbly creamy tan head. Good lacing. Aromas of cocoa, coffee, black licorice, toasted malt, and plum. Taste is full body, lightly carbonated, creamy and smooth, with taste character of sweet licorice. Finish is smooth and a nice flowery hop aftertaste. Nicely done!
