COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Pours a gorgeous near-black brown, deep mahogany at the edges. Light brown head, thick and lacy. Chocolate, faint molasses, subtle fruit note. Initally sweet chocolatey flavour dominates, while a port-like plummy fruitiness sneaks in at the end. Finish is a satisfying stemmy bitterness. Rich and full mouthfeel (in contrast to the Baltika 7 I just finished). Absolutely delicious-- epitomizes what I love about a good porter.

Ok appearance. Too much "corn-flakes" in aroma. An ok porter, dark and a fine flavor. But not complex enough. And the corn-flakes.....bad.

Bottled. Black with some head. Sweet, warm and fruity aroma. Smooth and fresh palate with a smoked flavour with plums and raisins.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 12 April 2008) Black colour with ruby hints, creamy pale brown colour. Roasted, malty nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and hints of smoke, tar and ashes. Roasted, malty taste with tar, liquorice, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, dark fruit and cocoa bitterness. Slightly sweet. Lovely, complex porter with lots of character.

[194-20070122] 12floz. Smells like a bit of beef was sitting in a sweet woody oak barrel deep in the thick of a forest. Dark brown black body with a big creamy medium-lasting light brown head. Lightly sweet chocolate malt flavour with an initial bitterness blending into a sweet aftertaste. Medium-full body, not too thick. Very well-blended flavour, texture and aroma, quite impressive.

This brew poured a medium head of fine to medium sized light brown bubbles that were mostly lasting and left a good lacing with a opaque black brown body and no apparent carbonation. Its aroma was mild with notes of malt and a mild alcohol smell. Its mouthfeel is initially kind of biting, from the hops, and finishes with a mild alcohol burn. The flavor is mild initially and then the alcohol flavor takes over. I can also taste some licorice in the flavor, but not much else. I don't get the typical malt and roasted caramel or coffee flavors from this porter and it has more hops than most. I seem to find myself bucking the trend on this one as I feel it is not the best example of the style. On the redeeming side, I think it has a higher ABV than listed as I can feel the buzz from just a half a bottle.
