COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle. Thick motor oily black color. Head was medium and very dark creamy like. Duration of head was medium disappearing. Impressive array of flavors hits the nose at first sniff. Aroma was liquorish, slight smoke and roasted, light coffee and chocolate with some light hops catachrestic in there like floral and herbs and yeasty notes like leather, earthy. Medium to full bodied. Flavor was medium bitter, with a bitter finish.

UPDATED: AUG 9, 2008 Original Rating Oct 23, 2002: Mmmmmm... Anchor Porter. Cold espresso with some roasted malt added. Very fine. 9/5/8/5/18 Re-rate Aug 9, 2008: Ah early ratings... It’s about time I got back to this one. Dark brown color with a large, long lasting head. Sweet malt and lightly toasted aroma. Bitter roasted malt taste, almost astringent. A little bit of coffee and chocolate. Still a staple Porter, but nowhere near "the shit" that I originally thought this was. But who could blame me? It was one of my first real beers!

Black with a thin tan head. Mild roasted malt and black licorice aroma. Med body and smooth. Has a rich , hearty taste of blackened malts with a hint of herbal hop sweetness to finish. Good stuff. 8905

Beer is quite dark, the head fades away quickly. Chocolate aroma. Malty taste, then more bitter and a little burned coffee aftertaste (in a positive way).

pours black, mocah head. Aroma of nice roasted malty with some light notes of dark fruits. Taste was similar, plenty of good roastiness, thin coffee, chocolate, cherry, with light bitter finish as wella s some sugary malts. This is a fine porter, can’t imagine what it would be with just another 1 or 2 abv on top.

Bottle: Dark dark brown, large foamy light brown head, sticky lacing.   Roasted malt nose, loads of apple skin.   Rich malt flavor, roasted of course, with quite a bit of light fruit (apple, pear) skin.   Very simply, but elegant, clean, and tasty.   Full bodied, medium to full mouthfeel.   Low hop presense, no real heavy coffee or chocolate, just good ol fashion roasted malty goodness with a pale fruit kick.

Very dark brown with a dark beige head. Quite a subdued aroma, perhaps a little chocolate malt. The taste is truly delectable. There’s a delicate balance between the medium dryness and the sweet, coffee and chocolate maltiness. Dark beer at its very best.
