COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

I can’t believe I have never rated this beer, since it is one of my favorite porters. It pours opaque brown with a very nice fluffy tan head and an enticing chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a hearty roasted malt flavor some carbonation, a bit of chocolate and a lot of dark molasses. This is a real porter.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2005 Bottled. Dark brown with a tan head. Herbal, grassy nose, with notes of dried fruits and plum, a little vineous touch to it. Rich in flavour, notes of dried fruits, plum, light caramelly. The maltiness stands up fine against the rich hopflavour. Light maltsweet, and long, finish. Medium bodied, medium bitterness. Flavourful!

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2007 Dark color, almost black. Quickly dissappearing head, brown lacing. Aroma of heavy malts, bacon, salami. Barley malt taste, typical non-belgian, licorice, coffee. Very weak porter. This is soooooo overrated...

Coffee flavour and aroma is prominent with this lightly hopped beer. Overwhelmingly smooth palate on the palate. A brilliant beer.

$1.99 at Total Wine (& More) in Kennesaw, GA. Appearane: Pours a dark brown body with a small, beige-colored head. Smell: Creamy chocolate maltiness with bright, tart-smelling raisin fruitiness. Taste: The taste of chocolate-coated raisins, like a glass filled to the brim with Raisinets. Hints of tobacco and citrus on the sweetish finish. Mouthfeel: Surprisingly, I’d say its almost a medium-full body. Very creamy and smooth. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: This is actually alot better than I thought it’d be.

Bottle (35 cl) from Systembolaget. Dark reddish brown with a medium beige head. Caramelly and roasted malt aroma with herbal hops. Medium bodied and smooth. Very well balanced with some initial sweetness, followed by a dry finish and a lingering soft bitterness.

The creaminess and subtle sweetness reminds me more of the better oatmeal stouts (ie. Samuel Smith). This is probably one of the smoothest porters I’ve had. I’m a big fan of anchor beer, and this is, by far, my favorite.
