COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Draft on tap at Sheffields (Chicago, IL). Pours a very dark blackish hue, near opaque with brownish edges that show some light brownish head. Dies to a thicker film, laces well, a bit cakey and frothy. Aromas are light cocoa and bakers chocolate, light roast and toast, toffee, creamy malts with some touches of dry soda bread. Initial is medium bodied, perhaps a touch lighter. Blends of cocoa, sweet and bitter cocoa, touches of roast, toast, creamy body with a silky smooth finish. Light roast. Toast, lingering toasty bread. Roast and touches of coffee, light roastiness. Simple, roasty and smooth with touches of light hops, cocoa and roast. A solid quaffable Porter. Mellow and decent roast. Balanced.

Draught at Csak a jo sor, Budapest. Funny how I seem to end up trying Anchor on tap everywhere on this trip... Very dark red body, almost black. Off white head, creamy. Nice full creamy malty nose, light notes of chocolate. Creamy malty taste, light herbal bitterness, light alcohol, maybe light chocolate. Simple but cool enough.

Pours coffee dark into a shaker with long-lasting, micro-bubble mocha colored head. Coffee, caramel, date and plum notes. Very light and thin but with a slightly fizzy carbonation. Rich roasted chocolate finish that lingers.

Pours near black with a decent brown head. Has a predominantly chocolate scent. Creamy dense body. Smooth chocolate like maltyness. Nice kilned touch, slight metallic element, with a light anise/licorice hint and a late balancing bitterness. Nice porter.

12oz bottle from BevMo! Mission Valley. Pours deep brown almost black with a small beige head that left great lacing. Very faint aromas of caramel and toasted malt. Not much to this beer, drinkable but, overrated.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2004 Excellent but unusual porter that features a fairly sweet fruitiness up front with a mildly bitter, dark roasted maltiness and a yeasty flavor taking over in the finish; The fruity sweetness also dominates the nose and is reminiscent of English style porters; Black in color and opaque; Large, frothy head is dark tan in color and has excellent retention; Lacing is stubborn at first, sliding down the glass rather than sticking, but eventually grabs hold in small amounts
