COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle 33cl. Jet black body. Light brown, creamy head. Nice burnt, mild coffee aroma. Some grapefruit hoppyness with a slightly smoked toffee smell. Sweet, moderate bitter taste. Long lively aftertaste.

Deep deep deep brown with a milk chocolate head. Smells of delicious dark malt though not especially roasty with strong hints of chocolate. Taste is smooth chocolate which follows into a bitter finish that is more cocoa bitter than hop bitter. A fantastic porter.

Classic looking porter with a nice large soapy head. Aroma is nice and malty with plenty of roastiness. This beer feels delightfully creamy and thick in the mouth. It is as much "oatmeal stout light" as it is a porter. Those lines are blurred here indicating a substantial porter. Many of this style offer muted flavors but Anchor’s is quite robust. Flavors are coffee, dark fruit, dark chocolate and sweet malt. A great beer! I want another one.

UPDATED: NOV 26, 2006 A classic porter which is pretty good. A nice dark pour. Tastes of fruit, coffee, and chocolate with some smoke and hoppyness in the finish. Strong flavor with a good mouthfeel.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2008 sweet malty nose. very creamy...a bit too creamy for a porter. flavor is sweet tobacco, nutty, heavy dark malt and more cola than coffee. there’s a slight bitterness on the finish. characteristics of a good stout but a strange porter. where’s the bitter? where’s the coffee?...must do some more research to find out...7/4/7/3/17=3.8

thick viscous pour... nearly impenetrable dark brown topped by a tan head. it’s got a luscious mouth feel. aromas of roasty malt, fresh cream, chocolate and light coffee combine with a strange fruity sweetness. aroma carries through to the flavor along with some molasses then finishes tart and lightly hoppy bitter. i tried hating on this but i can’t... it’s pretty solid. 7/4/7/4/17=3.9

I was expecting some chocolate in this drop but I can’t seem to pick it up, I do get some burnt yeast characters such as dry vegemite, a dry chalky texture, rich coffee bitterness. Deep black body with a light tan head. More lacing than my previous Anchor rating. Full aroma, first up burnt malt then some hops then a touch of liquorice. Smooth but full mouthfeel with full bitterness and a long finish.

12 oz. bottle. I was looking at the list of most rated beers, and did not realize until then that despite having had this beer numerous times, I’ve never rated it. I rectified that at lunchtime today...pours black with a moderate-large light brown head that lasted until nearly the last sip and left a foamy film on the glass. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is predominantly lightly roasted malt along with just a touch of bitter chocolate. Medium bitterness at the finish. Very solid porter.
