COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Re-Rate 11/13/02: The beer pours a deep brown, with garnet hues; the head is Herculean, spumous, light chocolate in color, and the lace in large clumps. Nose is malt, caramel, light toasted grains, somewhat sweet. Start is malt and ambrosial, the top skimpy, the finish has a germane hop presence, pointfully acidic with a dry malt aftertaste. Quite the decent porter, not overpowering, or under whelming, just plain “Good”. Ranks #272 on my current 1000 beer master list.

This porter was excellent, yet failed to reach expectations. Black bodied with a rich too thick chocolate head that settled like the islands in a rootbeer float. A rounded malt chocolate presence greeted my nose as well as some alchol and hops. The flavor was a bit robust and sharp malt with chocolate and alcohol appearing again to add an imperial stout like dimension. A fine, well-balanced porter that is good to have within arm’s reach.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2003 Deep brown - almost black - with a small chocolate milk head. Roasty aroma that smells like a chocolate malted with a shot of espresso. Nice mouthfeel, not as thin as many porters, but not as chewy as a stout. Well balanced flavour of sweet malt and bitter hops, with a dry licorice finish. A really fine porter.

Almost black body with a nice dark beige head. Beautiful! Aroma of liquorice, dark roasted malt, and a little alcohol. Flavor has a nice balance between sweetness and bitterness. Notes of liquorice, oranges, brown sugar and roasted dark malt. A nice and dry alcohol bite to the finish. Very smooth.
