COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

12oz bottle. Dark brown hue with a spiral off-white head. Toasty, malty chocolate nose. Little cocoa and spice. Medium to full bodied. Coffee and chocolate flavors with a sweet cola fruity malt note. Delicious and toasty. Sweet and cloying. Great flavor. Amazing!

I have to agree with everyone else here: this is one of the great porters. It has just a hint of chocolate, plus a great roasted malt flavor and is not overly sweet - it actually has a nice mild bitterness that seems to result from both hops and the burnt flavors (roasted malts).

Dark black oily color. Roasted malts in the aroma. Coffee, dark chocolate malts. Balanced sweetness, licorice taste. Very balanced. Very pleasant brew, could use some more bitterness though.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2004 Deep brown-black color, nice dark tan foamy, lasting head. Such a unique and full-bodied porter. Chocolate flavors with an incredible bittersweet, roasted malt finish and lingering hops. Thick and creamy. Quite satisfying.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2007 I’ve had this beer many times over the past few years, but never rated it. This is the defining beer for many a young person, I think. First off, I think it is very true to style; a bit thin, fair to great carbonation with a thin lasting head, quite dark (rubyish with intense light) in the glass. Chocolate malt sweet/nut aroma and flavor, dark malt roasted coffee and bitterness, some (although not a lot) hop bitternes in the close. All in all, an exceptional package. The only beer I know so closely that I waited this long to rate. And, this will be one of several beers of honor at my birthday party the 28th; the hostess (a professor colleague) loves it, we’ve got this year’s seniors travelling back into town to celebrate, and students of mine over the past two years will be coming from far flung places such as Boston and Providence. I’m a lucky man.

Poured from the bottle, a deep brown colour with a large rocky beige head. A rich warming chocolate malt aroma with a burnish tinge. Rich and chocolately to taste with a vinuous and roasted malt finish. Left with a velvety smoothness in my mouth - yum.
