COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

(bottle, with thanks to bierkoning) Almost black coloured hue with a mid-sized tanned foam, leaving some lace. Moderately sweet aroma of dark and slightly roasted malt with toffee and chocolate. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium body, smooth carbonation. Strong toast-malty taste with toffee and chocolate; medium-dry, bitter-roasty finish with notes of coffee and hints of hops.

NIce, relatively light, aroma of chocolate and malt. Through halgen the color is brown ruby, but without it is opaque. A nice tan head that does not wholly dissipate, and actually laces a bit. Medium mouthfeel that tends to collapse quickly as the mild carbonation leaves. The start is mild chocolate, and there is no toasted character. Some hop pops up, but it’s not strong. Very smooth, and it finishes relatively dry. Extremely drinkable.

Bottle conditioned, 355ml. Dark brown to black with beige head. Somewhat underflavoured porter with non of the fruitiness, tartness expected. There is a deep roasted malt note, chocolatey with some bitterness, reasonable palate but too sweet for a true porter. It looks overhyped in the marking to me, its really only average.

A Mes rate: Ok its pretty straight forward but very good all the same. Typical porter in looks, aroma and taste for me so I shall refrain from saying too much about malty chocolate, coffee and the fairly full mouthfeel. Nothing really stands out as being unusual or special. It’s just all done very well. A fine porter IMO

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2003 dark black colour with a thin and compact head, nice lacing, aroma of dark chocolate, licorice and alcohol, oily, thick, dry malty chocolate finish with a long lasting but somehow rough bitterness

Bottled (355ml). There seems to be some debate about whether this is a porter (a bit rich for that) or a stout (a bit light bodied for that?). What the hell, let's just call it an excellent beer. Black with a hint of ruby. Almost opaque. Malty with sourish hoppy notes on the nose. Pontefract cake (licorice) and bitter chocolate too, which carries through on to the palate. Quite rich, but not heavy bodied. Bitter chocolate (again) and espresso coffee on the finish. No hint of sweetness. Spiffing stuff.

Bottle (by kind permission of Bierkoning): Extremely dark amber coloured with a small, but stable tanned head; stronger dry roast-malty and slightly sweetish-coffeeish nose with a touch of aromatic hops; slightly sweetish flavour, but mainly solid bitter; medium-bodied, creamy oily texture; sweetish-bitter coffeeish-roast-malty finish. Pleasant brew from a sympathical brewery.............

Poured a dark black with a large brown head. Aromas and tates of carmamel and chocolate (stornger on the carmamel side). Very light coffee in the taste. Light bitter finish. Not bad.
