COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

I chose Anchor Porter as my 100th rating as this is a beer close to my heart... one in which all porters seem to fail in comparison. Pours a deep, blackberry/red-brown with a large, tan, souffle of a head that falls slowly and softly leaving excellent lacing. Heavy malt aromas are dark chocolate and dark fruits, with a light alcohol presence. The full-bodied flavor balances bitter coffee and semi-sweet chocolate, leaving a light tingle of alcohol to dry the mouth... which causes you to open another...

Near black, bit deeply reddish. Nice, thick, mocha head. Lovely nose, hints of chocolate, a bit of cofee, and nice bitterness. Some nicely deep fruitiness, bit of cherry or plum. Very nice flavor, impressively vinous up front, bit rich and sweet, slightly port-esque. Good roasts follow, hints of dry chocolate. End is crisp and perfectly hoppy, enjoyable dry and acidic. Excellent creamy flavor. #900.

12 oz bottle totally stolen from my Uncle’s house. Sable with a light brown head. Rich, chocolatey malt nose and flavor. Mochalike notes. Very lightly hopped, almost an afterthought. Nice.

355 ml bottle. Black. Extremely big, creamy brown head. Coffee, chocolate, roasted/burnt malt, liqorice and some hoppy bitterness. Lovely «low-alcohol»-porter!

Bought at Bierei, Vienna. Deep ruby-black body, small beige head. Fine espresso coffee in the nose with roasted aromas, some caramel-candy sugar, a bit of dried fruits and vanilla. Smooth mouthfeel with sweet-roasted malt, coffee and vanilla. Fine, delicios and easy drinkable.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2005 Slight rerate based on a 6-pack purchased months after first review... Pours dark with medium viscosity, and I could smell it even as I poured. Big head - about 3/4". Smells great - coffee like, bitter, malty, nutty and oats. Great sensation when it hits the tongue - smooth, with a bitter-sweet bite. Full bodied. Heavy duty lacing - looks like a snow storm. A good porter.
