COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

(Bottle) Body like black coffee, head tannish, rocky. So-so lacing. Aroma of molasses, vanilla, something floral also. Tastes pretty sweet, surprising for a porter. Mild coffee flavor also, some faint chocolate. Mouthfeel smooth, lightly fizzy. Kind of too sweet for me.

This was the very first porter i drank, but i had no clue what a porter was and thought it was another ordinary beer that would be easy drinking like Anchor steam. I didn’t really enjoy it that much and i was getting a big stomach ache trying to polish off a whole 6-pack on that 4th of July night of 2004. Now the tables have turned, and i have a bigger understanding of porters, so i’ve bought another six pack this week to re-visit it. The nose is a light presence of chocolate added with a slight whip cream aroma. A dark black that in actuality is a brown color accompanied by a little rocky topping of head while it will leave behind a major amount of lacing down the glass. The flavor might possibly be the most smoothest porter i have rated so far even though it isn’t the most flavorful. What does cross my tastebuds is a moderate bitterness level with a dark toasted malt back bone. As strange as this may sound, but when i take a sip while inhaling the aroma i swear it reminds me of red licorice candy ropes. Although i admit that this may not be the most richest and tasty porter out there; however, i will proudly say that this is in my favorite top 5 list of the porter style.

Bottle, Ale Cellar, Darlington. This is a little cracker. Poured a rich, very dark brown with a nice lingering creamy tan head. Aroma was knoclout, and had malt, chocolate and burnt orange. Flavour was just as good and was wonderfully balanced and intricate. Loads happening with the malt, hops, chocolate and coffee all superbly poised. Hop bitterness spot on. Absolutely tasty.

Pours black from bottle with a half an inch of khaki foam. Some notes of roasted malt on the nose. Slightly thin mouthfeel. It doesn’t exactly fill my mouth with flavor. Some notes of caramel on the tongue. Finishes clean. I’m not quite sure where the acclaim comes from for this one.

26-FEB-2010, bottle @home, from "Magasin". Very dark brown, high light brown head. Nicely roasted, coffee aroma and taste. Quite hoppy giving it added length. Nice, not overly complex porter.

Crushed with Jakebra. Now that is a robust mofo of a porter. Chocolatey and roasty aroma. Pretty damn delicious. Finish lasts forever with vanilla and roasty tobacco-y flavors. Top-notch.
