COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle. Poured black with medium tan head. Aroma was full with malt, hops and sweet. Flavor was full bodied with same tones as aroma and smooth rich texture. The finish was not as full as other porters.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown-black beer with a thick tan lasting head. Aroma of dark chocolate, plums and chocolate covered cherries. A sweet rye-like toastiness. Creamy body with plums, sweets toasted grains, plums and dried fruits. Herbal/spicy hops are also apparent. Long toasty/fruity finish with a hint of saltiness on the back. Great balance, great texture, great beer.

Thick black and viscous. There are tons of coffee and chocolate notes in the aroma. Very robust, yet smooth with a general roasted coffee flavor throughout. Plenty of sweet malt upon first sip and a nice balance of bittering hops. The finish is slighty dry and flavorful leaving you thirsting for more.

Deep black, with moka head. Nice vanilla chocolate aroma. Intense roasted malt with some nutty bitterness, slight lactic acid taste, creamy mouthfeel, with chocolate lingering for a long time. Splendid.

Thick, creamy, nearly putty brownish head, slightly irregular and leaving lacerings over ebony beer. Very chocolatey nose, as a creamy chocolate sauce for desserts; hints of tobacco, very lightly smoked and faraway C-hops. Powerful and delicate at the same time, balanced. Dry, smokey flavour with more tobacco and even ashes than the chocolate from the nose. Again just this suspicion of noble USA-hops. Gradually filling in with a discreet acidity from roasted barly and smoked grains, and the essence of unsweetened cappucino. Again wonderful balance. Not rich as a stout, but dry enough, and velvety. Again: excellent balance. Long lingering coffeeish-tobacco aftertaste. Very good porter. America’s oldest surviving craftbrewer has lost nothing of its aim for perfection.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2009 Bottled. Black beer with a nice off-white head which is fairly long lasting. The aroma is bitter chocloate, and the taste is also domnated by chocolate, almost to be point of being overpowering. A nice drink but needs some balancing.Score 3.7
