COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2004 Big nose of sweet coffee & chocolate. Small, med-brown head, gone fairly quick. At first taste there is not much at all, but after about 5 seconds, a soothing milky coffee coating washed over my mouth. This porter manages to do something very few other can: be smooth on the tongue while still grainy. The aftertaste is long and rich.

Bottle. Pours with a khaki head over a dark brown, near black body. Aroma is sweet chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, light banana esters, and light dark fruit notes. Taste is light roast and light bitterness with vanilla, sweet fruit and finishes slightly nutty. Light carbonation with a water like consistency.

Rich and satisfying. Sweetish black coffee is what springs to my mind. Very nice.

Pours brown, but slightly lighter than I’m used to seeing in a porter with a tan head. Smells of roasted malt (coffee, chocolate, peppery) with some sweet caramel qualities. Taste is of chocolate, coffee and raisins. The roasted elements are not exaggerated as they can be on some porters which is a good thing. Mouthfeel is oily and thick. Finish is chocolatey with mellow bitterness. This is an excellent beer for its style.

355ml bottle (Black door, Helsinki) Jet black, light regular beige head. Malty aroma, sweet and a little coffee-y. Sweet chocolatey malt taste, some burnt notes at the back. Later, coffee comes through and vine-fruits, and even winyness come to the fore. Alas it tastes a little alcoholic, which is surprisig at 5.6%. the finish is a smooth, almost lactic, maltiness.

Thin 0.5cm head is foamy, tan, never leaving. Body is dark brown, almost opaque. Aroma is typically porterish with direct barley flavors and a small lactic bite. Rich chocolate and anise flavors. Nice range of fruitiness reminiscent of a dates cake with lots of crust. Palate is thick, oily, sweet. Not much bitterness at all despite a gentle hop hint and apparent faint smokiness. I can understand its high rating, this is everything you want a porter to be. Classy and quaffable.
