COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Roasted, toasted, rich, bitter, & chewy, with just the right hint of chocolate aroma. Strong mouthfeel. I love the burnt flavor! Abstractly intricate ’Brussels Lace’ patterns form on the inside of the glass. Not too overly sweet like many porters. What a great beer!

Wow – this is one helluva brew. Beautiful rich ruby black hue – almost opaque. Aroma – heavy roasted chocolate malts, caramel invitation. Taste – smooth as silk – nice head - it is thick and creamy, amazing for a bottled beer! Aftertaste -reminiscent of coffee, although not overdone or long lasting. Excellent beer – places number one porter on my list (only b/c SS Taddy is impossible to get fresh)! Cheers! Had again this week -- top 5 all time beer -- smooth, creamy and drinkable. Chocolate delight! A must have!

Very good porter, not too sweet, just a little bitterness toward the end. A good beer for after dinner with a cigar.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2005 July 2001: Did a Porter session and sampled this after McNeills. Not disappointed with this great brew, probably 5 years since I’ve last had it. Wonderful smoky/sweet/popcorn (yeah, that’s what I get) aroma followed by incredibly well-balanced robust/sweet flavor. Probably the best American porter I’ve had. Now, if only I could get the barley wine around here....8/5/10/5/19 4.7

June 2005: yet another beer I rated incredibly high in my first year on RB that I will proceed to trash now...no, just kidding. The beer pours an incredibly well-laced, thick dark-headed coal black, just beautiful...lovely cocoa nose with small hints of buttery caramel and popcorn, hmm was I spot on 4 years ago?...vanilla and a tiny hint of orange as well...flavor is outstanding, the velvety moutfeel supporting creamy vanilla-chocolate, sort of "3 Musketeers" bar nougat goodness, but with some acerbic, lightly sour cherries and dark roast coffee giving some bite...compulsively drinkable, exquisitely balanced, still one of the very best porters ever and worth the extremely high grade I gave it when young and impressionable.

Best porter I have had. Hands down. Rich and roasted, without being too sweet. Excellent fullness in mouth. Perfect finish. Another great product from the best brewery in North America.
