COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2006 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is lightly malty (chocolate, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (pine), with a note of fennel/anise seed. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Is it just me or has this gotten more sour and simple of late?

Dark color. Some malt aroma; phenol. Malt mouthfeel, some roasted malt, caramel, phenol again! (maybe too warm).

Black color, brownish persistent head, nice perlage. Pleasant nose of malt, roasted malt; light medicine. Excellent mouth feeling, wrapping, roasted malt, light coffee, light liquorice, roasted nuts, malt, some sweetness. Powerful final, long, a lot bitter and with a bold liquorice character.

A very heavy tasting porter. Not as smooth as It could be, in my mind. Nice deep malty flavor, but something is funny here. Can't quite pin it down. Smells and tastes like it's an 7% or 8% beer rather than a mere 5.6% beer. Not the best porter I've ever had...

Nice packaging. Not bad taste or aftertaste. To be honest the first thing I tasted was metal.. Hopefully from the bottlecap. I would probably try something new versus purchasing this again, though.

(bottle): Pours a dark black-brown color. Big light brown head, good lacing. Dark heavy aroma, chocolate and some alcohol. Chocolately roasted taste, with some alcohol. Soft mouthfeel, fizzy. Somewhat acidic with meat pizza. An okay porter.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2007 Pours a dark brown color with thick frothy tan head that fades quickly. Aroma of malt, chocolate, faint coffee and molasses. Taste is somewhat fruiter then any porter I’ve had, almost a dark fruit flavor. The chocolate and roasted coffee make their expected appearance but are downplayed a bit. Some roasted grain shows up in the finish. Carbonation is moderate. There is a bit of an astringent or citric alcohol taste as well. Not impressed.
