COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Certainly the best wide-spread american incarnation of this style, anchor porter exhibits all the hallmarks. Deep rose-tinged black with off-white head, smokey oak on the nose, immense character in the flavor, tones of coffee, toffee, smoke, caramel, lighter on the palate than a stout, smooth slight bitterness on the finish. Anchor really hit the nail on the head here.

bottle. a dark brown with a brown head with big bubbles. As for smells, I got a roasted malt and caramel or chocolate and it tasted like chocolate and smoke with an pleasingly smoky finish.

Very dark brown, with a tan head. Almost no lacing. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, & hoppy spices. Nice chocolate, espresso and hop spices give a great body to the beer. A bit of licorice in the end. It may be a bit over the top, but in a good way, tastee

Very satisfying beer that pairs well with food. Quality is very consistent on tap or in bottle

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. The neck label has a nice description of the beer and there is a bottle code (OFJ) imprinted on the back label. Appearance: It has a dark brown/black body with deep crimson highlights and a tall three finger beige head on top. The head is slow fading and thick. It coats the glass as I tip it to my mouth and leaves thick splotchy lace patters behind. Smell: The nose is malty sweet and roasty with caramel, toffee, bready and light toasted bread notes with a hint of chocolate. Taste/Palate: It’s sweet up front with lots of deep malty texture in a full body. Roasted grain, toasted bready notes, caramel and toffee blend with mild bitterness from the mostly hidden hops and finish a little dryer but still with some residual sugary sweetness. It has a smooth full feel with light carbonation. Notes: Overall it’s a well made and very enjoyable American Porter.

Fantastic beer. Had on tap at the San Francisco International Airport Anchor Brewing company location. The pour is pure opaque black with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is roasty, chocolately, coffee, nutty and roasty. The taste is full bodied, thick roasty malts, chocolate abundant. A beautiful beer overall.

Very good porter with an absolutely beatufil black color topped off with a strong beige head. Great malty flavor with a nice hops finish. Big body to go with the big taste. Much better than its more well known brother Steam.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2008 I live in NH and have driven across state lines to find it by the bottle. Had this at Tapwerks in OKC. Pours dark dirt brown, with slight red tint. Notes of roasted malt, spices, wood, coffee, and fruit. Taste is amazing, complex. Not too dirty, not too hoppy. Some sweetness. Finishes with a small bitter kick. An amazing beer, but much better by tap than bottle. Really amazing stuff.
