COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

I have to agree with everyone else here: this is one of the great porters. It has just a hint of chocolate, plus a great roasted malt flavor and is not overly sweet - it actually has a nice mild bitterness that seems to result from both hops and the burnt flavors (roasted malts).

Excellent porter. Roasty up front, a little bitter in the back. One of the best porters out there.

I love anything by Anchor Steam, and this Porter is no exception. I would have to say that this is my favorite all around porter; not as sweet as other porters, which I don’t care for. Yummy.

TAP- Deep dark black; Fantastic head that was dense and lingered; Wonderful aroma that requires poetry I can’t pull off. Oiliness that swirls in the mouth. A sweetness that is exquisite. Dare I say, better then the Fuller’s- Yes, I will shout it from the mountaintop.

I was surprised at how dark and thick this beer poured. With its thick flow to its brown head, this resembled a coffee stout more than a porter in appearance. The smell is a lovely, deep chocolate licorice and the taste and mouthfeel is creamy and chocolatey. This beer is so full bodied and full flavored that you’d guess it was a stout. This could be dessert.

A ’classic’! Love it! Could drink all night, bonus poi nts for not being over the top, not too rich, not too high alcohol, not crazy wacky name or logo...just beer......damn good beer. Anchor is fantastic brewery and this is a wonderful brew. Notes of brown sugar and caramel with a toasty nuttiness. Creamy and so well balanced on the palate. This almost has a zen like, less is more restraint that I admire. Sign me up

What a beer! I’m lacking any real tasting notes on this as it has been a while since I’ve tried it. I just remember thinking to myself that this was one of the best beers i’ve ever had on tap.

The chocolate malts hit first followed by milder toffee aroma. Black with a tan pillow like head. Head starts off at a strong two finger then levels off to a one. Has rich coffee like taste that is only mildly bitter. Has a nice smooth feel. Has a nice sweet follow through that is quite pleasant. The rich malt in the beginning is superbly balanced with the sweet hop finish. Each mouthful is better than the one before. Haven’t had a dark beer like this taste so sweet. Pity I only bought one bottle. Nice job Anchor Brewing Company!
