4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
VERY dark brown pour, verging on black, but revealing ruby at the edges when held up to the light. The mocha head laces prodigiously until it settles down to a wispy film for the last half pint. The aroma of rich roasted caramel malts is paired with a herbal hoppiness and figs. The initial taste again reveals the caramel, but this is soon cut into by the leafy hops, which lend a pleasant bitterness to this drink. In fact, this is probably the only porter I’ve had where the hops have been given this prominence. Adding to this the melange of well-meshed traditional porter flavours of roasted malts, chocolate and mild coffee, and you have a winner. The mouthfeel is smooth, with perfect carbonation for the flavour. Dangerously drinkable.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Completely dark bodied, small to medium sized tan head. Sweet alcohol nose, although it has only 5.6% ABV. Very nice coffee aroma, but maybe a little bit too sweet. Some dark fruit too, sweet chocolate. Medium to full body. Flat to soft carbonation. Very nice. Very nice indeed.

Purs dark brown, almost black color with minimal tan head. Aroma is chocolate, malt, dark fruit, a bit of coffee bitterness in there. Medium to full body. Sweet taste followed by some bitterness. Overall, pretty good one, but nothing to really amuse you like I thought it would be.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Lots of porters but this is good for the style. Smoky toasty and roasty goodness. Nice easy drinking which I have had in bottle and fron brewery as a taste.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Hell yes. Anchor’s Porter may be four decades old but this stuff still kicks ass. This is a quintessential Porter. Not-quite-black color, tan head, and a roasted flavor. On the nose, Porter gives you a lot of cocoa and some fresh coffee. Taste is less sweet than the smell might make you think. Toasted malt, coffee, and bitter chocolate create a dark, excellent harmony. Mouthfeel is rich and a bit sticky. You know you’re doing something right when your 40-year-old recipe is still considered one of the best for the style. The brewers at Anchor can rest easy knowing that Porter still rocks.
