Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly French-speaking region of Belgium. Bičre de saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. Anchor Saison Spring Ale (7.2% ABV) is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, Anchor chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Amber color with a moderate sized beige head. Pale to lightly toasted malts, mild herbal hops and a farmland yeast backdrop. Light sweetness in the front is quickly rushed away with dry malt, dry herbs and mild spice. Dry finish and linger. Nice spring night by the firepit brew. Teeters between a saison and golden. 4/15

12 oz bottle into a Porter Bar goblet. Clear copper body topped by a weak white head. Floral-fruity-yeasty-bready aroma. The flavor is spicy (mainly ginger), mildly bitter and lightly floral including some lemongrass. Unusual mouthfeel for style: medium-full body with a creamy texture.

On tap @ Beer Temple, sample size glass. Light copper color, as good as clear. White to off-white head, firm, with reasonable retention. Aroma’s of sour fruit and caramel malts. More caramel retronasal, along with some sweet fruit (apricot notably). Flavor is light bitter with some fruity acidity. Medium bodied. Moderate bitter finish.
