Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly French-speaking region of Belgium. Bière de saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. Anchor Saison Spring Ale (7.2% ABV) is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, Anchor chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours copper with a thin, white head. The aroma is banana, spice, and yeast. The taste is banana, wheat, lemon, and hops. It was a little heavy. This isn’t one of the better examples of the style. It was okay.

20/VI/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: II/2018 (2016-682)

Clear amber beer, huge creamy yellowish head, very stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, caramel, some banana, fruity, sweet. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body (with 7%?). Taste: sweet start, malty, little spicy, very subtle, some caramel, dried fruits, little bitter. Aftertaste: pretty spicy, bitter hops, sweet touch, malty, grains, hint of ginger, orange peel, little sweet.

Keg at Brewdog Soho, rich bright brown with a lacing head, aromas of clove dominate, with barnyard and ginger just below. Palate brings caramel and more spice, touches of lemon and a peppery hoppiness, then a ginger warmth appears in the very slightly over-sweet finish.

Grassy, wheat, saison yeast in the nose. Dark golden pour with thick, fading foam. Moderately sweet taste, citrusy crispness with a yeasty sour finish. Medium body, slightly above average carbonation. High alcohol level provides a warm finish that reminds you of the hops. Good complex flavor. A moderate / mild example, but a good one.

355ml bottle. Slightly milky, orangey golden colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, off-white head. Floral, fruity and minimally spicy aroma, hints of plum, lavender, ginger, clove, a touch of spruce. Taste is moderately sweet caramel malty, slightly spicy, minimally soapy floral, hints of ginger and clove, a touch of liquorice. A bit weird - flavours seem to be more artificially spiced than yeast obtained.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Trader Joe’s. Aroma is nice fruity esters and bubblegum. Appearance is clear, beautiful amber orange with nice sparkle, ephemeral white fizzy head and no lacing. Taste is like the fruity ester/bubblegum aroma but also with something like allspice or cinnamon or nutmeg (from the saison-style yeast? the lemon and ginger?) you’d find in a winter warmer. Palate is medium bodied with thin texture, lively carbonation, spicy pepper, lightly tart finish, and slight warming sensation in stomach. Overall,

More weizen than saison? Slightly funky baked orange and banana esters; slight spice/pepperiness – ginger? Little too fizzy; orange/lemon peel/marmalade fruitiness (or green pepper?). Short-med finish, v slightly little too thin-feeling. Still, an enjoyable little mini fruit and veg stall
