COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly French-speaking region of Belgium. Bière de saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. Anchor Saison Spring Ale (7.2% ABV) is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, Anchor chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

At Craft Bier Fest, Wien. Pours cloudy orange with small white head. Fruity, bit yeasty, spicy. Decent, but too light for my taste, lacks body and more flavor.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Clear amber, small head. Discrete aroma of honey, marzipan and ginger. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Fruity with some herbal spices, notes of marzipan and warming gingery finish. Given Anchor’s track record I was expecting more. This is more modern and less soulful than I was hoping.

Sixer from the corner store .. Pours a crystal clear dark gold .. Mild head, good lacing .. A bit sweet, cereal, corn husk, farm fart filtered by straw, sweet yeast .. Light mouth, medium linger .. About what you would expect from anchor making a saison .. . . I just want to get through tomorrow’s ultrasound unscathed

Clear golden orange with no head. Faint aroma of melon and barnyard. Taste is spicy with clove, coriander, and white pepper. Finish is a little skunky and dry. Unpleasant aftertaste. Palate is watery. I usually like saisons but this wasn’t very good.

Bottle (35 cl)) from Systembolaget. Clear amber, off-white ehad. Bready malt, some nice peppery and bubble gum-phenolics upfront followed by a bit too evident spices. Medium bodied, mmedium carbonation. Dry, low to medium bitterness.
