COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Pours a fairly clear straw yellow with a fluffy finger of head. Nose is light, just a hint of sugar and earthy spicy hops. Taste is equally light, some slightly shitty off flavor, tastes slightly skunky, good amount of bitterness from the hops, body is fairly dry and light. While it wasnt the best beer around, it went down extremely easy.

I’ll skip the aroma because what I could smell (I’m a bit stuffed up at the moment wasn’t bad. Light hop and light over all smell of maybe some sourdough which is to be expected. Appearance is average at best, nothing special it’s a relatively clear amber. Taste is ok, sourdough, lightly malted, with a bit of an earthy hop flavor. Nothing extraordinary but at the same time it wasn’t bad. Palate was very light, but maybe a little on the dry side. Overall, it’s a good beer for what it is but because of that and nothing really standing out to make it something special it’s just sort of average. Not something that I would say no to drinking if given the chance again but I’ll drink some others before I come back to it.

Bottle. Pours with a large, off-white head and a clear amber brown body. Aroma of grain, honey biscuit and caramel. Taste is off...sour, lactic, with biscuit malt, a strong astringent bitterness, and just overall, quite weird. Medium bubbles, dry mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pretty, glowing, amber color. Light caramel malt aroma. Light palate, with big bitterness, good hops, and light caramel malt flavor. Hugely bitter finish lasts a long time. Light and refreshing--works well for the light style.

Bottle from State Line Liquors. Wasn’t expecting a whole lot from this beer, and it was more or less on point, or not on point, or whatever. Soft amber pour with a lightly fragrant malt aroma, and a good bit of tea in there amidst the hops. Slightly leafy taste too, very earthy and with a dry finish. Decent and certainly a worthy shot for such a low ABV, but nothing I’d be too enthused about on a return trip.

Pours light copper color with white head. Faint grainy aroma. Mild hop bitterness. Light to medium body with average carbonation. Not much going on, but pretty good for what it is.

Pours gold into the glass with a small white head. Aroma is soft malt sweetness and a nice spicy hop nose. Not a style that will blow you away, but this is a damn solid beer with lots of flavor for such a low alcohol content

(bottle). Clear golden/amber color. Medium white head, which is mostly diminishing. Grainy aroma and flavor. Long duration. Dry finish. Thin texture. Heavy carbonation. Fair lacing.
