COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

bottle poured a light amber in color with a thin head and lighter carbonation. aroma is fairly light with sweet malt, light hops, and bitters. flavor is thin for what anchor usually does but it is a 3.3% brew. lightly malted with residual sweetness and bitters. glad i tried this because the concept is great but it is just too light to be compared to other anchor brews.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2008 Bottle from BevMo. Medium golden in color upon pouring. Malty aroma. Much breadiness. Fairly thin brew. Bready with a light hop character. The finish is quite bitter. Not bad for a low gravity beer.

Pours bright golden with a wispy white head. Aroma of pale malt, herbal and bready malt. Taste is bitter, grainy with pale malt and herbal notes. Light to medium bodied with lively carbonation. Easy to drink, but not that enjoyable. Thin bodied and bitter.

Part of Syd’s weak beer fest. Bottle pours amber with a really large head; OK - a huge and lasting monster of a head with lots of lace. The aroma is of hops and some malt in there. The flavor has some dry malt, some hops to balance it out. The palate is thin to medium rich. Overall, I think this is a real nice alternative to NA as a "crap - I have to drive later" session beer. Under rated.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2008 This was a real disappointment and I found it utterly unenjoyable. It didn’t help that I expected more from Anchor, generally love bitter, and liked the idea behind the beer. It is amber with a medium off-white head that slowly shrinks to a foamy top and leaves some weak lace. The aroma is a lot of grain, hay, hints of dust and yeasty dough, light earthy-piney hops and hints of sulphur and fruit. The aroma is tus nice and has a definite English quality to it. In taste, however, it is mostly just bitter with an astringent, drying bitterness that has a sharp grassy-lemony quality but little real flavour. There is some faint earthy-old grain taste, but very little and overall it really ias just bland and bitter with almost no real flavour.

pours clear yellow orange. nose is soured grains and earthy hops. flavors is tart lemony and grainy finishing with a grassy hop flavor. Very drying almost astringent finish. Not a very good beer at all, but not a drain pour.

Definitely not a great beer, but MUCH better than the reviews. I’m surprised how low the reviews are frankly. It’s nice and bitter, and, obviously a good session beer since the alcohol is so low. I’m not sure why this is labeled small beer though.

Very pale copper, surprisingly white head. Doughy, bready aroma with hints of caramel and some fresh herbal hoppiness. Toasty cracker malts in the flavor, more light caramel, finishing cleanly with an assertive bitterness, lightly tangy. Carbonation is a bit overdone. I like it, and enjoy historical aspect and the fact that they were able to get more beer out of the grain. The flavor is light and faint but actually quite nuanced. Cutting down the carbonation could actually make this into a pretty nice low alc beer.
