COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

I found this quite enjoyable. It is a little watered down, but I suppose that could be expected. The flavor is still very nice and it goes down pleasantly.

The worst of the Anchor products. Its kind of like a watered down, boring, but still bitter, version of Anchor Steam. Eh, passable...

22 oz bottle, Stateline Liquors. Pours a clear dark gold body under a small fizzy off-white head that had some nice retention due to the vigorous carbonation. Aroma is fairly light, some biscuity and crackery malt with just a touch of hoppiness. The flavor is quite dry with much more bitterness than I expected. It’s quite astringent as well, almost as if the sparge temp was too high. Light to moderate hoppiness with biscuity malt. Finishes a little husky and thin. Mouthfeel is thin and watery with moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, this wasn’t the most enjoyable beer. The high astringency really taxed my palate by the time I got to the end of the bottle.

650 ml bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a moderate white head. Unassuming nose with a slight sweetness. Light semi-sweet body with a touch of hops in the finish.

Has a very malty flavor to it & is highly carbonated. Nothing notable in the color, but the aroma really reminds me of the stuff that floats at the top of a fermenter tank. An interesting concept for a brew, & worth trying, but not something I’d go for other than that first novelty.

Bottle. Clear golden color with a light white head. Slight lacing. Aroma is light and almost smells like toast. Definitely different. Easy-drinking mouthfeel. Flavor is small, like its name suggest, with a slightly hoppy and bitterness to it. I’m a fan of Anchor, and this is a decent beer. I’ll buy it again.

12 ounce bottle poured into a shaker. Clear golden yellow with some nice carbonic bubbles rising to a nice white head. Decent bready aroma with a punch of earthy hops. Flavor features the hops and then the malt. Highly carbonated. Its beer.
