COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

A nice clean easy to drink small brew. This was light golden in color with a thin head. The flavor was thin but there. This was a very easy to drink and taste beer. Light in all flavors. If you didi not sotre right this beer would go south very fast. I liked trying this beer.

Rated 2/4/07: I really like the concept of this beer, had no idea about the process until I had already bought the bomber THEN decided to read the label. Leave it to Anchor to continue an age old method of beer making that likely is rarely performed today. Light lively aroma a smidge of bitterness and malt. Grand pour, nice light copper color with a monsterous fluffy white head and more than ample lacing. Very crisp and surprisingly filling for such a "small" beer. Flavor is real nice. Good maltiness coupled with a fine light bitterness, simple and well received. Goes down real smooth and quick, this is a great session beer. Love the small oval label on the beautiful big bottle, nice touch.

Had it on my deck after a 15 hour workday. Should have worked 16 hours. Nothing spectacular. Liked the color. Have after mowing the lawn.

The aroma here is cereal. It pours a yellow gold with a frothy head. The flavor is really just cereal here followed by some lemony hops. Pretty basic. Light bodied. Easy drinking. Not so much a bitter, but more like a gold ale. Not bad, but not that good. I would drink it again, but not seek it out.

22oz bottle. This will be my second time drinking it, the first time I split it with a friend and never got around to rating it. Pours golden with very active fermentation and a two fingered head. Aroma is earthy, spicy hops. The flavor is earthy hops, almost rye-like, with a biscuty malt flavor and a pleasant, clean finish with just a bit of hops. Not a bad bitter, but overcarbonated for the style. The overcarbonation doesn’t actually affect the taste. Would be interesting to try on cask. Easy drinking and enjoyable.

strangely-shaped 22oz bottle from state line liquors in md. well-carbonated, pours a clear copper with abundant creamy white head that doesn’t go anywhere anytime soon. aroma is bready, some hops, and hints of sour fruit. light body, definitely thin but expectedly so. flavor is a touch of caramel, nice hop finish, very minor sour twinge on the end. definitely a quaffer, but i’d like a little more body.

The aroma naturally favors the hops with so little malt content! It pours quite attractively, a clear light gold with a fine, short-lived head. The flavor also favors the hops, quite cleanly extracted, but the lack of malt body lessens the palate and finish.

Cold 22oz bottle: Pours a clear bright orange color with a small, frothy ivory head. Aroma is of light malts and flowers. Taste is of light malts, earth and flower notes. Watery texture and moderate carbonation. Dirty aftertaste.
