COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Nice light copper coloured ,crystal clear, tiny off white ead, that lasts barely seconds. indistinct malty aromas, slightly tofffeeish ,slightly fruity. Malty beer, seemingly well carbonated with a small tinge of hopping throughout. Ok on the palte, pretty good actually for one so weak . I didnt mind this it all, maybe too exspensive for what it is. If they sold this in 12 packs below $9 I would buy this all summer. Good summer drinking that wont get you totally messed up.

Nice thing to try, maybe even have it again this summer. Enough hop bite to make it a decent bitter has it warms. As you would predict, a little watery and very light to drink

Bottle. [Enjoyed with thewolf on Plan B] Vintage April 2006. Huge beige head that mostly lasted. Clear flat looking body with an amber hue. This is a thin version of the Foghorn, and it is actually quit nice. Aroma was caramel, fruit, hints of smoke. Light to medium bodied with a slightly dry texture. Flavor was predominantly sweet, but some burned like bitterness can also be detected. Somewhat sour and light bitter finish. No doubt that the Foghorn is a completely different experience that said I still felt that this was a good beer.

Small, white sorta fizzy kinda head that,s short lived. Seriously brite light copper colored brew. Lacing is spotty at best. Nose of grainy malts and a hint grassy. Body is light with a slight tartness on the palate, kind of interesting though. Dry malty flavors, hint of citrus, lightly bready. Finish is dry, bitey. Nothing to write home about but i can see me quaffing a few of these on a warm summers day and at 3.3% ABV i just might be doing that this summer. It is what it is, a small beer. Wonder how it is on draft?

Bottle. (April 2006, 3,2 % on the bottle). Pours an orange amber with a fine soapy-looking yellowish head. Aroma is weak with some caramel and a touch of smokyness. Taste is surprisingly crisp - roasted, smoke and caramel with a little thin bitter aftertaste.

Bottle. Caramel-orange color. No head. Lightly hoppy to the nose. Watery, tea-like, only colder and more bitter. Thin with tangy initial taste. No thanks.
