COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

8/19/06: Bottle.
Subtle malt aroma. Body is golden orange with a light tan head. Flavor is very mild. A good example of this style of beer.

Aroma was beery, malty, with a hint of hopps. Slightly darker than american macros. Flavor was malty, though not particularly sweet. Not bad.

Squat bomber, courtesy BitBucket Jr. Beautiful bottle. Pours dark straw with more than a wisp of white head, but not by much. Vacant nose, neutral palate, nothing on the attack and little on the finish. Absent hops. Nice to know what small beer’s all about, but this is interesting only as a history lesson. The only boring beer I’ve yet had from Anchor.

It probably was a bad idea to sample this after several "big" beers, but this seems like a not-too-distant cousin of bottled water. I applaud the attempt to get the full value out of the mash, but this is just to vacant for my tastes. Maybe some hops would help.

Pours amber into a shaker. Off-white medium sized head with good retention. Fraternity basement notes. Filtered mung water; but not entirely unpleasant. Better than non-alcoholic...

Was ready for this to be a complete waste, but perhaps to gearing down it actually seems quite okay. Sure ain’t running out to buy cases, but there’s enough juice left after the fog to run hops through and keep an old tradition going. Sure, maybe they could add more, but wouldn’t that be cheating?

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep amber, clear, with moderate carbonation. Very large bubbles at first. Thick, pillowy head with fairly decent lacing. Faintly metallic aroma, the bland smell does not bode well. First taste yielded an immediate second taste because the flavor is so weak. What flavor there is starts slightly sweet but turns quite bitter very rapidly, finishing in a combination not unlike sourdough rolls. Overall impression is that this beer has been beefed up because the malt was too watered down. Nice concept, poor execution. Not a horrible beer, but certainly not worth the price or the time.

Slightly hazy gold w/ light amber highlites under a thin white head. Weak and slightly hoppy aroma with some minerally qualities. More flavorful than anticipated with citrus, fresh baked bread, hops and lightly toasted malt. Thin mouthfeel and not much of a finish. Overall, I liked the flavor of this beer and I’m glad I had the chance to sample one but it wouldn’t be a regular in my beer fridge if it was available out here.
