COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Pours, looks, foams up, and smells GREAT! Tastes like watered down Foghorn with a FLAT DRY finish. I won’t be buying it a second time.

Bottle. Sparkling honey colour with a fluffy white head and high carbonation. Light eggy aroma. Just a one dimensional malt base thats incredibly thin leading to a harsh bitter finish and rather revolting aftertaste. Absolutely not a good beer. Such a big bottle of beer to pour down the drain.

Hot tub sitting round Ma and Pa’s, 31/07/11. Still bronze-gold, lazing carbonation, slim white collar. Faint pine cone aroma with background cooked veg, evergreens. Soft and slightly bilious; honey-dipped wafers, mineral water, OK creamy malt on the finish but generally not much else in the flavour department. Watery, coniferous hop, Disprin hints. Small in every sense except, sadly, the bottle- 650ml is 600ml too much.

Pour is a bright gold with a large white head. Aroma has some burnt malts with a little sourness in there. Flavor is almost nothing. A little bitterness but that’s about it. I understand what they were trying to do here but it just dosen’t work..

Tasted a bottle that I got at Bevmo in San Diego, CA. Pours a fairly clear golden color, with a fizzy white head. Has a very light aroma of bready hops. Flavor is not very good...pretty much solely centered around a very one-dimensional, sharp bitterness that develops with each sip. Body is too light; I understand that this quality comes with this style of beer, but there needs to be more happening flavor-wise for the wateriness to be forgivable. As it stands, it just seems like a boring, thin, bitter beer. I had been wanting to try this one for a while, and I’m disappointed.

(22oz bottle from Total Wine Desert Ridge). Pours a clear golden color with nice white head. Active carbonation. Aroma is sweet with melon, papaya and some grass. Taste is sweet malt with the bitterness creeping up. Thin bodied with oily texture. Lightly bitter finish. Nice, light and flavorful session beer.

22oz. bottle poured into tulip glass. Pours a light golden straw color and has a white minimal head. Aromas highly of cereal, some hay and light citrus. A very light bodied beer of course, but big on bitterness and carbonation...fizziness takes over the palate basically. Finish is bitter and very dry. I’m a fan of Anchor but this isn’t up there at all for their best...just the steam beer alone is way a better choice. Cool bottle but I wouldn’t buy it again.

Bottled, thanks to tgncc in trade, light amber color with a malty dry aroma, flavor is thin malt, newspaper, flinty hops, light bitter finish
