COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

The aroma is sour with notes of malt and mash. The color is orange and it has a fine head. The flavor is very malty in the beginning and has a rather bitter end. The body is thin. All the good stuff from the mash has already been extracted and is to be found in one of my favorite beers: Old Foghorn - so I'll stay away from this one and stick to Old Foghorn.

appley aroma, light straw colored, light, crisp and bitter hoppiness, tastes like a tart & crisp apple with kind of a rubbery finish

Watery, yeasty and metallic. Unfortunately more like the steam garbage than the Old Foghorn from whence this beer was spawned. While I'm all for reviving brewing traditions, some practices have gone out of use for a reason.

Big bottle. Pop open and pour, the kitchen fills with the malty scent of the brewery. Refreshing to take in a big malty aroma. Goes down real nice - lots of malt: i get the "baby" old foghorn reference. This beer is a real treat.

Wow am I glad to see that I am not the only one NOT to like this thing. Golden amber thin bubbles white head that is quickly discipating. THe nose is rusty wheaty and burnt hair. The taste is hoppy, wheaty, and rusty and proteiny, tastes like burnt hari almost OFFENSIVE. Bottom line, just not good.

Big Bottle for a Small Beer. Poured clear amber with a thin white head. Aroma is faint and predominantly hoppy. Flavor is unbalanced, little sweetness, lots of bitter hops and a disturbing metallic finish. Thin body and moderate carbonation. Guess using the same mash twice sounds like a better idea than it actually turns out...

Clear, deep golden color with a slightly creamy white head. Some malt, maybe some hops in the aroma, but overall not that impressive. Really bitter taste, but nothing you'd expect from a true bitter. Kind of skunky actually. It actually tastes like this was brewed twice, which isn't that impressive to begin with. I bought this 22 oz. bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, NY.

This bottled brew poured a medium sized head of foamy white colored mostly lasting bubbles that left behind fair lace. The body was softly carbonated transparent and a golden amber color. The aroma was mildly skunked and malty. The mouth feel was acidic metallic and tingly. The flavor was malty and hoppy with more hop than malt.

Bottle. This one was just way too bitter for my taste and it just was not an enjoyable drink for that reason. It poured a small sized white head that was frothy with fine-large sized bubbles that completely diminished. The body was transparent with soft carbonation and a yellow hue. The nose was malty, hoppy and sweet. The flavor was very bitter from start to finish. The mouthfeel was all bitterness. The lacing was average.

Steam light. Straw colored with a white head. Had a strange herbal metallic taste to it.
