COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Very hopped and dry. Still not much nose and not much in the malt. This is made from their Foghorn washings. Are they better off not putting out this brew?

Very fizzy and watery, decent bitterness, but the lack of malt character was unappealing. Low alcohol content is a negative.

I think I’m only the second reviewer who likes this beer. But any beer brewed by Fritz is okay by me. Anchor Small Beer is thin by the standards of American micro ales but it makes up for it in pure refreshment. The bitterness hits pretty hard in a beer lacking much malt profile or body but in thirst quenching way. If I could easily get it on the east coast, this would be an ideal everyday beer ... at least when I don’t want to get bloated from Anchor Liberty ;-)

Am I the only person who likes this beer? Sure its overly bitter, and not particularly balanced, but it is an interesting mix of flavors.

Bitter and thin, but I like it more than their Steam beer. Of course, I’m not much of a fan of the Steam beer.

The worst beer to have come from anchor. Little in the way of body and an overall lack of malt chewiness. Empty bitterness throughout. I love hops, but this bitterness was too much.

Appearance: slightly reddish, nice head, clear. Aroma: slightly stale lager/pils; strong but not so good. Flavor: very hoppy and dry, little malt presence -- like very strong grapefruit, almost mouth-puckering. Body medium, finish bitter and lingering. I might like this more than most; I find it kind of interesting for Anchor, but it is certainly their weakest product overall and I can only recommend it to diehards.

Would expect more out of a fine brewery like Anchor. This stuff is like water with neither malt nor hop profile very evident, almost like water. Hop bitterness, but no hop flavor.

The only Anchor I have had I don’t like. I like most bitter beers, but this was just bitter and cranky. No body, none of that characteristic Anchor mouthfeel.

By far the worst Anchor beer I have drank. I was expecting remnants of the barleywine. This beer tastes more like an American lager style.
