COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

I like the idea of a small beer but I thought that this didn’t balance well. Serving: Bottle

On tap @ Wildeman. A clear looking golden one with a really nice big dense everlasting white head. Mild caramel sweet, hints of apples and malts. Even a little bit of nice grassy hops here. A nice mild aroma. Not to for off like drinking water this. Really lightdrinkable and somewhat refreshing. Thin and let’s admit it, watery in the mouth and it’s gentle on the carbonation. Biscuits and thin malts. A little hint of something fruity also and it ends with cardboard and minerals. That one definitely went away quickly! 25.09.2014

De Wildeman, Amsterdam. Keg. Clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry and crisp. Smooth semi dry malts, touch of dry cream. Floral bitter hops. Whisper of citrus. Dry finish. Medium bitter linger. Clean but basic golden bitter.

Keg at De Wildeman, Amsterdam, 25/09/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose carries light floral notes, caramel, dark fruits, malty pinch. Taste comprises earthy tones, bitter orange, spice, straw. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, bitter trace in the close. Ok but a little basic, ticks the style boxes I guess but a good advertisment as to why bitters are way better on cask in order to allow the flavours to develop!

UPDATED: SEP 10, 2014 Tap at the Wildeman, Amsterdam. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeast, citrus fruit hop. The flavour is light bitter with a dry yeast mineral sulphur like palate. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. What were the Anchor guys need thinking of. Probably the worst beer I’ve had had from this brewery.

Had this several times before (pre-RB). On tap @ In De Wildeman. Clear golden color. Frothy white head. Aroma’s: grain, a bit vegetal & sulphuric. Retronasal it’s grain & fruit. Flavor is moderate bitter, grainish. Light bodied, quite thin. Finishes with a rather earthy bitter flavor. Pleasant enough.
