COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

it poured a clear orange color with a small head. The aroma was of sweet malt, toffee, and some mild grassy hops. The flavor was similar, with sweet caramel, fruit, and mild hops. A decent California Common.

Föregångare som idag känns snäll och drickvänlig, men som inte lämnar djupare intryck.

Sweet and vaguely tangy malt aroma, slightly metallic. The taste is dry and somewhat bittersweet with bread, malt and alcohol. No beer for me this is!

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

Apparently the original US craft beer and actually one of my personal first contacts with American beer beyond Bud, Miller and the likes. Back then, I was amazed by just how much flavor it had, but oh how things have changed since... Not a bad beer by any account, just not a very complex or distinct one either. Pours light amber / copper with medium white head. Aroma is more malt and yeast than hops, with a bit of hay and earthy tones. There’s also a bit of a funky off-flavor that I can’t really put my finger on. Taste is generally very balanced between malty sweet and hoppy bitterness but a bit too smooth and lacking enough of a finish. Body is very light, which doesn’t help the generally lightweight feel of the beer compared to other US craft beer. Sounds like I’m bashing it, but in all fairness this is a very decent beer - it’s just that in light of its competition - all those amazing US craft beers - this beer feels more like an improved mainstream brew than a true craft beer.

Anchor Steam is a quality beer , incredibly smooth with a great taste. Slightly expensive, but the quality of this beer makes it worth the buy.

Only example I know of that I have tried. Not sure when it came out but it was a novelty and certainly had more going for it than Busch or Coors or PBR. It is still a light weight in the craft beer spectrum though.
