Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Almost orange beer with a quickly-dead foamy head. The smells is very interesting with notes of cardamom, chocolate, strawberries and even some mandarin. Slightly alcoholic. Bitter-sour with a fresh watery feel and lots of hops. Some spices. First sip I thought ’Oh shit, here we go with another seriously sour ale’, but no, the sourness dies away leaving a refreshing watery feel.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma had some malts but somewhat nondescript. Flavor is nice with a nice start of malts and some hops later on. Very smooth as well.

Looks, smells and tastes pretty ordinary. Fizzy, bit of a bitter aftertaste. I seem to recall liking this more in the past.

Great summer day beer. Whenever I’m drinking Anchor Steam I never have just one. But, for sitting down at the end of the day for a tall flavorful beer this isn’t my first choice.

Deep orange-amber pour with a thinning white head, aroma is slightly malty, great mouthfeel and well balanced with hops and malt, finishes moderately dry... a very balanced and enjoyable beer.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours sligtly hazy amber with a rich head. Light malt aroma with a hint of sourness. Refreshing and light malty taste.

This is a lovely refreshing style of beer and also my first time trying it. Relatively straightforward, but with enough subtlety and decent production to boost it head and shoulders above regular beers. Nice dirty blond/copper in the glass, not exactly lazy carbonation but just enough to keep it crisp and creamy at the same time. It has an immediate crisp attack which is fresh and tasty, taking you into malts, a touch of biscuit and then comes right at the end a lovely dry, floral hop finish which leaves you wanting more. Also it has a nice bit of length to the finish, which is slightly reminiscent of tea. Good effort. Look forward to trying the Liberty Ale!
